Kristen und James kommen gerade von der Hochzeitsfeier eines Freundes und sehnen sich nach ein wenig Ruhe. Sie fahren in ihr einsam gelegenes Ferienhaus, um dort ein paar Tage zu verbringen. Kaum sind sie angekommen, scheint es dort zu spuken: Es pocht an der Tür und drei mit Masken vermummte Menschen schleichen durch den Wald. Sie werden das Eis Funny Games U.S. genießen und in der Hand bleibt Ihnen der Stiel The Strangers. Eine Wiederverwertung von abgedroschenen Klischees, eine Handlung ohne Entwicklung und ohne einen Ausgang, Schlüsselkollapse bei der Logik und der Wahrscheinlichkeit. Bryan Bertino weiß nicht einmal, was eine Aufnahme einer Kerze mit einer schiefen Flamme bedeutet. Das Drehbuch und die Regie sind wertlos, den Film vergisst man schnell. Er wurde geschickt wegen seines attraktiven Trailers und der Starbesetzung verkauft.

A film exactly to my taste. A couple of likeable (!!!) heroes in a house, a trio of masked strangers near the house (with a bit of luck, those characters have a big chance of starting a good horror franchise), slow pace, thick atmosphere… great, really. The tension can be felt throughout, the direction is more than decent for a debut and the ending in truly chilling. The Strangers can appeal to everyone who enjoyed the French film Them, it actually gives its European sibling a good run for its money. 75% PS: I see that I’m probably the only one who didn’t like the trailers but liked the film proper. :D

A relatively sympathetic hour and a half of terror, which probably won't admit its inspiration from the French film Them, but I won't take points away for that. The film deprives itself of them (unnecessarily). The promisingly sketched plot loses steam before the halfway point, only to end up on a miserable flywheel of long-worn clichés, which then culminates in an ending that is a great celebration of correctness. Unfortunately, this also brings down the well-sketched relationship of the main characters, which the director manages with a few shots, and the successful build-up to the "action," when the pounding on the door freezes the blood... it’s too bad because even watching it at midnight with my laptop in bed didn't help.

Here they are. A bunch of morons who put on masks and got a taste for killing. If not for the first fifteen minutes of the movie which made me turn off the film the first time I was watching it, it is a psychological horror with a good atmosphere that a horror genre fan can definitely appreciate.

Two heroes, three psychopaths, one house and a fight for survival. The Strangers may be a hopelessly unoriginal horror film, but who cares when most of the time the atmosphere and tension work perfectly?

Mir gefällt die Idee, zur Abwechslung mal einen Horrorfilm zu drehen, in dem die Menschen nicht vom übernatürlichen Gesindel bedroht werden, sondern von gewöhnlichen Sterblichen. Zusammen mit der Figur von Liv Tyler war es aber das Einzige, was ich an The Strangers interessant fand. Der Film war nämlich langweilig, ich habe mich nicht gefürchtet, obwohl ich mich bei Horrorfilmen gern und oft fürchte, wenn ich einen Grund dazu habe. Das Einzige, wozu mich die Geschichte gezwungen hat, war das Staunen über die Dummheit der Drehbuchautoren. Ich führe ein Beispiel des idiotischen Verhaltens der Figuren an – der Gedankengang des Haupthelden, von mir frei paraphrasiert: "Sieh mal, Schatz, jemand versucht, unsere Eingangstür mit einer Axt zu zerschlagen. Ich schieße von innen mit einer Schrotflinte in die Tür. Ist ja egal, dass ich in die Tür ein riesengroßes Loch mache. Vielleicht bekommt der Trottel Angst und macht die Tür beim Nachbarn kaputt." Wie gesagt – ich habe anderthalb Stunden vergeudet (im Hinblick darauf, wie kurz der Film ist, war er recht lang). In dieser Zeit habe ich Lust bekommen, mir Peckinpahs unübertrefflichen Film Wer Gewalt sät anzuschauen.___PS: Mit "die Figur von Liv Tyler" meine ich nicht ihre Rolle.___PPS: Richtig erschreckt hat mich wahrscheinlich nur der fürchterliche Countrysong vom Plattenspieler. Brr, ich weiß, dass ich von ihm träumen werde.

The Strangers weren't bad at all. If I'd never seen a film with this theme, I'd definitely rate this higher. This way it was just another one of the many similar efforts which, although well-made, didn't offer anything new. It was pretty obvious from the start how the story would turn out. I just didn't expect the evil to be so perfectly depersonalized - I didn't really find out who or why. I guess these questions just weren’t meant to be answered.
