Joe soll in Bangkok gleich vier Aufträge für den lokalen Gangsterboss Surat erledigen, danach will er aus dem Geschäft aussteigen. Um seine Identität zu schützen, beauftragt er den Taschendieb Kong, sein Laufbursche zu sein und Kontakt mit dem Auftraggeber zu halten. Doch bald bricht er seine eigenen Regeln, freundet sich mit dem Jungen an und verliebt sich in die taubstumme Apothekerin Fon - mit verheerenden Folgen ... (Sat.1)

Untouched by the original, but aware of the direction of Nick Cage’s acting career, I approached the film with a slight bias. But as the Prague intro suggested, the Pangs made it into a B-movie, which they tried to spiritualize with a wistful romance. However, it's hard to believe in the hero who, with his zero emotion, then has an emotional outburst for a deaf-mute girl. At the same time, it makes the film less fateful, which the final meeting in the warehouse especially needed. This leaves us with only a few impressive moments (the action in the pool, the shot-up boat, the elimination of the pickpockets) that you can't erase from your memory. It’s too bad the same can't be said for the whole film.

A hitman heads to Thailand for one last job and discovers his humanity in the process. The lacklustre script drags Bangkok Dangerous down a lot, and a lacklustre Nicolas Cage doesn't help the result much either. Fortunately, though, the Pang brothers know their way around a camera and occasionally manage to pull off an interesting-looking scene. Overall, though, the film is a rather bland average that you can easily miss in theaters.

The Pangs do a good job, but the uneven performance given by Nick Cage spoils things and the story is a little weird. Nevertheless, the action scenes are really nicely done, Tyler’s music is A-grade (perhaps it’s better than the entire movie) and the Prague locations made me happier than I had expected.

Pure routine with an invulnerable killer who has everything under control, his mischievous apprentice with the heart in the right place, a fragile relationship between the hitman and a deaf-mute girl, remorse, talks about happiness, and some action thrown in, surprisingly, with even severed limbs and a body torn in half by a grenade. Nevertheless, as a remake, it is a shamefully sterile and unexciting film. There is no progression in the plot and the ending is emotionally weak. In terms of what Nicolas Cage is currently involved in, it is average.

Nicolas Cage ist – was Drehbücher betrifft – ein Pechvogel. Ansonsten kann ich mir nicht erklären, wieso Bangkok Dangerous so miserabel ist, wenn der Regisseur eine ziemlich gute und interessante Arbeit geleistet hat. Ich hatte keine übertriebenen Erwartungen und habe mich auf einen unterhaltsamen B-Movie gefreut. Nach dem Anfang in Prag sah es vielversprechend aus, nach der Ankunft in Bangkok auch. Dann wird es aber schlimm. Das dämliche Drehbuch macht aus Cages wortkargem Killer einen Idioten, der (obwohl er ein Superprofi ist) nicht weiß, welches Desinfektionsmittel er in der Apotheke für seine Verletzung kaufen soll. Er verliebt sich in die Apothekerin, fängt mit dem Training seines Mittelsmannes an (warum eigentlich?)… Fürchterlich. Zum Glück gibt es in dem Film ein paar gute Actionszenen. Sie sind aber leider kurz und wurden durch leere Passagen verbunden. Die beste Actionszene ist die Verfolgungsjagd auf den Booten… Der Mord des Schufts im Pool ist effektvoll gedreht. Die Schießerei am Ende fand ich auch gut, obwohl sie für meinen Geschmack zu dunkel ist. Zweieinhalb Sterne.

An utterly charming cock-up as Nicolas Cage hits on a mute Thai pharmacist, kneels in front of Buddha, feeds an elephant, and shoots people. It's incredibly stupid and I nearly went insane laughing several times. It's definitely worth mentioning the brief cuts to surprised Czech police officers when a guy gets shot in front of them. That's just great. Or Nicolas, the very cool killer, inviting the bitch over for dinner and eating that hot food and being all shitty about how it burns. Also totally awesome. The Pang brothers really don't know what they're doing, but they deserve two stars because... I don't know, you can't tell an armless kid that the house he painted with his feet sucks.)

Den größten Teil dieses Actionfilms über haben ich Eier gefüllt, also orientierte ich mich ganz in den Figuren und stellte erst danach fest, dass die Protagonistin stumm war (deshalb einige stille Passagen). Wenn ich die Eier nicht gefüllt hätte, hätte ich vielleicht den ganzen Film gar nicht durchgehalten. N. Cage ist wohl, auch wenn er sonst ein sehr sympathischer Mensch ist, in eine prekäre finanzielle Situation geraten, die ihn zwingt, bei jedem beliebigen Film ja zu sagen. Der Schluss war etwas hingezogen, das Ende war zumindest nicht ganz so kitschig. Morgen werde ich den Film schon vergessen haben.
