Snakes on a Plane

Quite an entertaining piece of crap, perfect for a fun movie gathering with a beer in hand. It requires a lot of detachment, and then you don't mind the crazy logical lapses and the fact that something similar, in different variations, has been done many times before (although I don't remember "oral sex" by a rattlesnake). I missed a bit more humour and an original idea that would refresh the pile of predictable clichés (although I admit that the initial idea and the showdown with the snakes is appropriately crazy). Of course...when the ultra-cool badass Samuel L. Jackson, with an irresistibly pissed off expression, blurts out "Enough is enough! I have had it with these motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking plane!", it's clear that you just can't go below the 3*, albeit close :) (03.01.2007)

I read a lot of things about this film (all the hype surrounding it, etc.) only after watching it, which is good because, since all I was aware of was its average rating, the only thing I could expect was ordinary silly fun. That is exactly what I got, therefore I’m satisfied, but I can imagine going to the cinema for the “B-movie event of the year” only to get something where you can’t tell whether it’s stupid intentionally or unintentionally, in which case I think it would certainly not get three stars. Riding the massive wave of various genre clichés with icy calm is a hell of a dose of detachment, which director David R. Ellis really doesn't spare. Even though the fan hype was quite a bit stronger than what the film actually turned out to be, with a cynical dose of audience perversion, one can do nothing but revel for 105 minutes in what wonders can be cooked up from the "B-movie" genre. Definitely the best ultra motherfucking cool movie of the year! (19.09.2006)

From beginning to end, a hopeless and exhausted borefest starring Samuel L. Jackson instead of Eric Roberts. By the end I was really suffering, and I like B-movie stuff a lot. If it wasn't for the stupid advertising campaign that wanted to turn this crap into a cult-movie, I'd probably be more moderate, but I won’t (06.10.2006)

Wie bitte? Ich wünschte mir, der Streifen wäre zumindest so doof, dass er Spaß machte, jedoch er hat noch nicht einmal diese dezente Dosis einer Rindsviehhohlheit. Es ist lediglich eine stupide Klischeeansammlung, außerdem in einer tragisch langweiligen Sequenz. Als qualitativ zufriedenstellend würde ich da nur Samuel L. Jackson beschreiben, ansonsten hat mich da gar nichts beeindruckt. Dumme, entleerte Langeweile ohne einen Hauch von Spaß. (24.09.2008)

Maybe more like 3 and a half. Filling a plane full of snakes is a seriously deranged idea. From the moment when the snakes start crawling out of their... um, holes, we witness the most repulsive possible snake attacks on people (compared to other places, the bite in the eye doesn’t seem that bad). And we are treated to some cute PlayStation, RedBull and surfboard product placement. An entertaining B-movie with the superb Samuel L. Jackson and a bunch of pissed snakes in the leading roles. A remarkable action caper that captivates primarily with an unusually straightforward script without any higher ambitions and a charismatic Samuel L. Jackson in the lead role. If you’ve been looking for some time for a genre film that is action-packed, fast-paced, entertaining, and that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and even makes fun of itself, Snakes on a Plane is the right choice. There are plenty of colorful snakes, plenty of spicy scenes, and plenty of serious wisecracks. The attractively portrayed aviation issue will put a smile on your face, as it's not too far from real practice, while a seven-meter python swallowing one of the unnamed businessmen will make you life. A decent one-off, with perhaps a too simple and casual finish in the form of landing at LAX airport. (15.04.2007)

Samuel L. Jackson kicks snake ass, but unfortunately it's not as much fun as I thought it would be, because there's a surprising lack of farce in a film based on such a far-fetched premise. Or there is, but we didn't meet on the way. (02.08.2021)

Just as there are pulp novels, there are also pulp movies, and Snakes on a Plane (calling it anything else would be quite disingenuous) is one of them. Unfortunately, even Samuel L. Jackson's participation did not change the final impression. (21.12.2020)
