Der Planet des Galaktischen Friedens ist eine Einöde, die dadurch an Bedeutung gewinnt, dass nur hier die Föderation, die Romulaner und die Klingonen jeweils einen Botschafter haben. Der Vulkanier Sybok, der mit seiner hypnotischen Überzeugungskraft viele Bewohner zu seinen Anhängern gemacht hat, nimmt die Diplomaten als Geiseln und kann sogar die zu Hilfe eilende Enterprise unter seine Kontrolle bringen. Kirk muss gar überrascht feststellen, dass Sybok ein Bruder von Spock ist. Und nun will er mit Hilfe der Enterprise einen mythischen Planeten in der Mitte des Universums ansteuern, auf dem Gott höchstpersönlich leben soll… (Verleiher-Text)

Treten Sie ein, Shatner! Paramount hat das ganze anscheinend als kleines Bestechungsgeld für den revoltierenden Star erachtet, jedoch die amateurhafte Regie und ein grob zusammengebasteltes Drehbuch haben Star Trek V in die Kategorie der Misserfolge geschickt. Unheimlicher Klatsch über Gott, ein enorm gewollter Humor sowie unnatürliche Beziehungen zwischen den Charakteren wachsen den Machern zum ersten Mal seit 1979 sind über den Kopf heraus. Während Wises "Einser" die hohen Ambitionen halbwegs ausballanciert hat, verdient Shatners Fünfer ... eine Ausreichend. Um Ohrläppchenbreite des Mr. Spocks.

Accepting the Farthest Frontier means coming to terms with the fact that the mood will significantly differ from what the viewer experienced in The Voyage Home. Instead of delving into American society, clichés such as a stepbrother or another hateful Klingon are introduced, and attempts to create a good mood through camping or a damaged Enterprise feel forced. Nevertheless, the fifth installment surprisingly earns positive points from me, especially for its second half. The visions sparked by Sybok and the final conversation with Him are literally amazing, whether it be the suspenseful atmosphere or the controversy that Shatner and Loughery daringly provoke. Without unnecessary digressions and with a clearer goal from the beginning, it could be the peak of the series.

I quite enjoyed this. It's somewhat naive in places and doesn't try to be action-packed, but that didn't bother me at all. I haven't watched the whole series, but I easily got attached to the characters and could go through this pseudo-philosophical spectacle with them. Kirk, Spock, and Bones are excellent and mainly carry the show, but others also get involved. And somehow, it's just enough.
