Leviathan

So ein offensichtliches Abklatsch der besten Sci-Fi-Horrorfilme (Alien, Das Ding) würde heutzutage wohl kaum punkten. Aber gegen Ende der 80er Jahre stand dieses Genre immerhin noch etwas höher im Kurs (The Abyss, DeepStar 6) und so entstand überraschenderweise ein gelungener Popcornfilm, unterhaltsam und immer noch frisch nach so vielen Jahren. Wir dürfen uns auf eine atemberaubende Visualisierung der Unterwasserstation freuen, sowie auf verschiedenste Masken, die sich vor unseren Augen ständig weiterentwickeln. Wir kommen auch nicht um eine gierige Firma herum, die nicht zögert, unschuldiges Blut zu opfern, Verräter in den eigenen Reihen und vor allem ein Monster, das Intelligenz von seinen Wirten übernimmt und unter extremen Bedingungen überleben kann. Und wenn wir dann noch die solide Besetzung hinzuzählen, die von B-Movie-Veteran Cosmatos (Rambo 2, Cobra) geleitet wird, haben wir hier fast einen Kultstatus erreicht. (12.07.2011)

Leviathan belongs to the forgotten titles of its genre, and I don't even remember it ever being aired on TV. It must be said that it's rightfully forgotten. It's not so bad that it falls into the category of a guilty pleasure or catches your attention with its bizarreness. It's just desperately unoriginal, unremarkable, clichéd, and above all, boring. The problem is not with the actors or the set. Don't expect Oscar performances, but the casting corresponds to what B-grade sci-fi calls for, and the actors deliver exactly what is necessary. The interiors of the underwater station look decent, but the director lacks the sense and ability to create the right dark and claustrophobic atmosphere. The script diligently copies successful sci-fi horror films of the past decade, starting with Alien and ending with The Thing, but it doesn't make much effort with logic and certainly isn't inventive. What didn't turn out well at all is the monster. If they can't make it properly, they should at least not show it and work with hints. I really wouldn't want to treat the decompression sickness after the final jet escape from the station to the sea surface... Overall impression: 40%. (18.06.2013)

Drei und ein Stück. Nur weil ein Film an berühmtere (und bessere) Werke erinnert, heißt es doch nicht, dass er so viel schlechter ist. Leviathan hat eine gute Stimmung und eine sympathische Schauspielbesetzung. Es ist nur schade, dass er sich von den erwähnten Brüderchen und Schwesterchen so sehr inspirieren ließ, dass seine Autoren praktisch keine richtige Idee hatten. Außer dem Faustschlag am Ende, der ist wirklich originell. (15.09.2012)

This is not a stupid film: in a cramped setting, we watch brisk B-movie rate carnage with a solidly portrayed alien that doesn’t look bad and, besides, has the performance of the great Goldsmith. But it’s one of those films that would never have been made if it wasn’t for the existence of the filmmaking and thematic templates it is so dependent on. And let’s be honest, it can’t hold a candle to either Alien or The Thing. (28.02.2019)
