An einem nebligen Morgen im London des Jahres 1893 findet Jack the Ripper ein neues Opfer: er tötet kaltblütig eine junge Prostituierte. Zur gleichen Zeit enthüllt der Schriftsteller und Erfinder H.G. Wells vor den Augen seiner staunenden Freunde seine neuste Schöpfung: die Zeitmaschine. Doch jäh wird die Runde durch das Eindringen Scotland Yards unterbrochen. Im Medizinkoffer des angesehenen Arztes Dr. John Stevenson finden die Polizisten blutverschmierte Handschuhe und ein Skalpell. Der eben noch anwesende Arzt aber ist spurlos verschwunden. Er ist in der Zeitmaschine entkommen. Wenig später kehrt die Maschine in Wells’ Wohnung zurück – ohne Dr. Stevenson. Wells besteigt sein Gefährt und setzt dem Flüchtigen nach. In der fremden Welt des Jahres 1979 beginnt er die Verfolgung seines mordenden Zeitgenossen. (Verleiher-Text)

Malcolm McDowell is a great actor and in this film, he beautifully demonstrates that he can also play pleasant characters with depth. There is always something special about him, which is given by the plot. He definitely has his charm, like the whole film, which is a thriller but pleasantly light-hearted and romantic, working in all aspects - the dramatic, bloody, comedic, and romantic.

H. G. Wells pursues Jack the Ripper through time and space. Seems like a great theme, and the cast... But however good it looks on paper, in practice it is terribly dull. It falls into trivial romantic cooing that isn’t worth wasting a good theme on, because that could happen without any time travel, Wells or the Ripper; but here all of that is somehow sidelined.
