Oklahoma, 1873. Jed Cooper gerät in die Gewalt von Wilson und seinen Banditen. Sie legen ihm einen Strick um den Hals und hängen ihn auf, aber in letzter Sekunde wird er gerettet. Richter Fenton, der das Verbrechen wie die Privatjustiz mit äußerster Härte bekämpft, macht Jed zum Deputy Marshal mit dem besonderen Auftrag, steckbrieflich gesuchte Verbrecher einzufangen und der Justiz - und damit in der Regel dem Galgen - zuzuführen. Die Ladenbesitzerin Rachel verfolgt seine Aktivitäten mit besonderm Interesse; erstens gefällt ihr Jed, und zweitens hofft sie, daß er eines Tages den Mann herbeibringt, der ihren Mann ermordet und sie vergewaltigt hat.
