Dr. Joe Darrow (Kevin Costner) ist Arzt – und Realist. Täglich wird er mit dem Tod konfrontiert. Als seine geliebte Frau Emily (Susanna Thompson) bei einem humanitären Einsatz im Dschungel von Venezuela ums Leben kommt, bricht für ihn eine Welt zusammen. Er kommt über ihren Tod kaum hinweg und glaubt, täglich ihre Nähe zu spüren, als in seiner Umgebung plötzlich seltsame Dinge geschehen – Joe erhält Zeichen für die es einfach keine logische Erklärung gibt. Was bedeuten sie? Kommen sie aus einer anderen Welt – versucht etwa Emily mit ihm Kontakt aufzunehmen? Er muss Gewissheit haben. It isn't entirely bad, but it's the kind of mystery film that stands and falls on atmosphere, which is something that a routine-man like Shadyac is utterly unable to induce. Thus, even a fairly solid premise, decent actors and decent music can't save the result.

I can't help but watch On the Wings of a Dragonfly is the same as eating unseasoned goulash. That movie desperately lacks atmosphere, it lacks sophistication, something that nestles in the viewer and doesn't let go. It's not bad per se, it has decently written dialogues and I had no problems with the film heroes from the acting perspective. However, I can't give it three stars, I would need stronger impressions for that. The film flew around me like a dragonfly on wings... Overall impression: 40%.
