Auf halsbrecherischer Flucht haben die beiden spanischen Ganoven, Tulio (Kevin Kline) und Miguel (Kenneth Branagh), eine Schatzkarte gefunden. Darauf ist der Weg ins sagenumwobene El Dorado verzeichnet. Als blinde Passagiere wagen sie die Überfahrt in die Neue Welt. Mitten im Dschungel stoßen sie tatsächlich auf die Goldstadt. Göttern gleich empfangen, wähnen sie sich im Paradies. Doch der aztekische Hohepriester Tzekel-Kan (Armand Assante) und der Spanier Cortez (Jim Cummings) verfolgen finstere Pläne. (ORF)

Although the combination of classic and computer animation is a bit outdated or slightly disturbing, the brisk adventure story isn’t outdated. Sometimes it’s a bit of a variation on The Man Who Would Be King, and above all the amazing songs of Elton John, which I think playfully match those of The Lion King. And when the heroes are dubbed by Kevin Kline and Kenneth Branagh, the fun and quality are taken care of. The Road to El Dorado is not a groundbreaking animated film, but it is a great spectacle to watch and listen to.
