Das große Museum (2014)

Englisch A very interesting ticket to a museum and its nooks and crannies you normally wouldn’t get to visit. The documentary offers some interesting shots, moments and situation that would otherwise be lost on you, which is its biggest upside and technically, most likely the reason why it was made at all. It’s interesting, of course, but I’m not exactly sure if I’m the kind of person jumping in joy over something like that. Though I usually love museums. The user ABLABLABLA’s wonderful review reminded of me of the best moments which I’d already forgotten. Except for one – the discussion about the ticket font. The absurdity of that situation was limitless. But it assured me that idiocracy can be found everywhere… even in art.

La Guerra dei vulcani (2012)

Englisch The giants of this era Ingrid Bergman and Anna Magnani have not left their mark on me yet, even though I’ve been familiar with them. So now I was curious about what this documentary would come up with. And it didn’t come up with anything at all. A random assortment of footages and movie clips is complemented by a dull narrative, which most certainly doesn’t provide me with any reason to start being interested in these actresses.

The Commuter (2018)

Englisch Liam Neeson and Jaume Collet-Serra have met on the screen for the fourth time already and yet again, I can’t get enough of it. A perfect small-scale film with an inventive script that uses a train the good old Agatha Christie way and offers a gripping plot with a solid unravelling. And since Liam is a champ for his age and Jaume can work well with CGI, you’re up for a rollercoaster full of adrenaline. It might reek of special effects, but I didn’t mind that one bit. Great camera angles brilliantly capture the action scenes and doesn’t start shaking as soon as Liam look at it the wrong way. It created so much adrenaline that it was hard for me to lower my blood pressure back to normal after watching the movie.

Social Animals (2018)

Englisch A comedy with dialogues quality similar to any movie starring Josh Radnor. The only difference here is that you can feel that the script was written by a female writer, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but the absurdity of certain situations was.

The Tale - Die Erinnerung (2018)

Englisch Laura Dern in a movie which pretends to have a story with a capital S, only there’s no need to pretend anything since that is the title of the movie. At the same time, it tells a completely simple tale of how easy it can sometimes be to banish any thoughts from your past when you can’t understand them or refuse to. As far as the actors go, it gets a little tiring half-way, but the ending is so jaw-dropping that it might take you a moment to collect yourself.

Case (2015) (Serie)

Englisch A decent Icelandic case, only its chance of becoming more public was ruined by the voice acting. The voice actors sound bored and it transfers to the show itself. They are not, however, the only problem. Another downside are the actors who look like they’re missing a few buttons on their remote control. The interesting case is also dragged down by the main duo whose replacement would probably grant the series another star. A shame, because overall, it wasn’t that bad.

Fack ju Göhte 3 (2017)

Englisch I wasn’t very hopeful that they could keep up with the quality of the prequels, but in the end, it really wasn’t all that bad. The problem was that funny scenes were followed by cringy ones, which only reminded me of Girls, Girls and an era during which everybody said that the Germans made the worst movies in Europe because they were only familiar with these crazy commercial comedies – frantic editing, absurd scenes, wannabe funny music insertions… There were a few scenes like that in this movie. For example, the moment when Chantal and her friend accidentally indulged in virtual sex, and her friend’s grandma put a cookie in her mouth. Well, luckily, they saved it with the rest and with the fact that I’ve already grown used to this throughout the first and the second movie.

Elephant (2003)

Englisch Gus van Sant’s a pro. I certainly can’t deny that he showed certain director qualities in this movie. The impersonal and precise analysis of a school atmosphere was perfect. The impersonality is so raw and emotionless that it’s hard to view this movie from any other angle. But it all stands and falls with the end that is brutal, even given the expectations. But it doesn’t tell you anything about anyone at that school, it just shows what happened there in a dull manner. But why? That’s what Michael Moore’s documentary is for.

Summer of 84 (2018)

Englisch The era of 80’s summer adventures with your childhood gang behind your back and some good synthwave soundtracks shall never end. This movie has exactly the same vibe that we’ve recently seen in It or the show Stranger Things. It’s a remarkable mysterious story, with an atmosphere that bursts at seams with the 80’s and music that is more popular now than ever. I had so much fun. A childhood adventure that begins almost as a family movie and ends with quite the massacre.
