Wish I Was Here (2014)

Englisch This films portrays the life of one Jewish family who has lived through some hardships but is quite likable. Too likable, perhaps. It was shot in such a way that it was impossible not to grow fond of this family. Add in some geek jokes, Sheldon Cooper and one dunderhead who doesn’t know what to do with his life, because in his heart he is still a little kid with a head full of ogres, videogames and dark mages. Oh, and he’s a genius, by the way. Wish I Was Here is an independent American movie with everything that entails, which tells its story in such a way you just can’t dislike it.

Stretch (2014)

Englisch An excellent stylish action/comedy ride, which gave me much more than I expected. Patrick Wilson plays a seasoned guy while Chris Pine portrays a real nutjob. Overall, this was a road limousine taxi trip that I probably won’t forget easily. Actually, it wasn’t as funny as it was cool, and I just hope that this film’s fame spreads as much as possible, because it really deserves recognition.

Tage des Donners - Days of Thunder (1990)

Englisch This movie reminded me of Top Gun a lot, with fighters replaced by NASCAR cars. Otherwise, it was exactly in the same spirit. Eighties music, a young cool guy Tom Cruise, an old guy who helps him to be the best, and a love story without which it would not have been possible at that time. Overall, a nice action flick by Tony Scott. But if I could, I would give a pass to the romantic storyline that irritated me as much as in Top Gun.

Land Ho! (2014)

Englisch I was lured to this movie by Iceland, as is usually the case with me. But I had no idea that the only Icelandic thing about this film would be the locations, and otherwise it would be a classic American movie. Nevertheless, classic it might be, it was also very pleasant. Two grandpas go on a trip and enjoy it in a way I wouldn’t mind experiencing myself. They drive around, camp, bath in warm lakes, party, smoke weed and so on. I might have, however, missed something at least a bit dramatic going on in it. All in all, not much happened in this movie. The landscape, however, spoke in its stead, and in the end it was enough.

Kandidát (2013)

Englisch I have a feeling that the Slovak cinematography has been improving in the last two years. And as is often the case, the Czechs are involved, even though they didn’t show off much with their own movies this year. Anyhow, hats off to the Slovaks. Candidate is such an apt satire of today’s politics that it made me nauseous.

Der Rauch des Kartoffelfeuers (1976)

Englisch A solidly made Czechoslovak melancholy film about the life of one man, portrayed by the best Czechoslovak actor ever – Mr. Rudolf Hrušínský.

Die ins Gras beißen (1962)

Englisch I really liked how the Americans behaved so light-heartedly in this movie. The 1960s are definitely a time when many war veterans still vividly remembered WWII. Hell Is for Heroes is a rough film, but it’s not afraid to throw in a whole host of pretty absurd situations. The best part was how a guy suddenly appeared at the enemy line, even though he was supposed to be about thirty kilometers away with a jeep. He crashed the jeep into a tree, the soldiers took the jeep from him and then scared the Germans on the other side of the line with it, because after the collision the engine rattled in it so loud the Germans thought there was a tank, which saved the whole situation, which would have otherwise been a total mess. I must say that I was quite satisfied during these 90 minutes. The movie was rough and absurd, and at some moments it brought a smile to my face. The war here is not portrayed exactly in the way I imagined, but as a movie it wasn’t bad.

Der City Hai (1986)

Englisch So Arnold is quite the tough guy here. Or maybe not.

Sugar (2013)

Englisch A very rough film, but also very believable. It was only at the end that I understood that the film was created not only to show us something, but also to point out something important in this world. And I must say that it really only took 90 minutes for me to realize the worth of my living in this world. Sugar convinced me like no one else has done in a long time. With a story as straightforward as the longest road in Australia, but also so sincere that this girl, who was previously a stranger to me, immediately found a place in my heart.

Sex Tape (2014)

Englisch Let it be known that this is not the best comedy starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel ever made. On the other hand, I can’t say that I could rate this with less than three stars. It’s just totally average, even though I’m very fond of these two actors.
