Before Sunrise – Eine Nacht – Eine Liebe (1995)

Englisch Two strangers meet randomly, spend a whole day and night together, and then comes the critical moment when they have to part ways. However, while Before Sunset takes place only during the day and in beautiful romantic Paris, Before Sunrise takes place at night (probably the most significant change). But whether it is a shimmering evening in Vienna or the sunny romantic Paris, the actors, the screenplay, and the camera work are top-notch. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy are fantastically well-matched. It’s true that this and the second film are purely conversational, but they are shot so passionately and with such a unique style that it’s impossible to dislike them. Moreover, they don't lack humor, intelligence, and natural charm.

American History X (1998)

Englisch This is how controversial films were made in the 1990s, a level less intense than a decade later.

Der Flug des Phoenix (2004)

Englisch The first five minutes, with excellent camera work, are just an introduction, getting to know the main characters, and so on. Then comes the most important part, the collision, which is captivatingly filmed, typical of John Moore's action-style of directing, with quick cuts, dynamic shots, fast and sharply contoured camera moving from side to side. But that's all the film offers. It is technically competent, decent in terms of its premise, but poorly handled in terms of the screenplay and acting.

Die xue shuang xiong (1989)

Englisch The Killer is mainly a timeless action romp that is hard to compare with anything. Unlike the action-packed Hard-Boiled, John Woo here places more emphasis on the characters and their personalities. The direction is different, but the outcome is similarly good.

Starsky & Hutch (2004)

Englisch This time, the 80s are quite cool. Todd Phillips surprised me and directed a quite accomplished retro comedy that is definitely worth seeing, not only because of the great atmosphere, but also because of well-executed comedic situations and good retro music.

Dark City (1998)

Englisch The dark setting and black backgrounds create an original and depressing atmosphere. Alex Proyas literally revels in this, and it must be acknowledged that this is his style and he is a good director. Rufus Sewell is in an unusual role here, one of his few in B-movies. The film has a very peculiar atmosphere and top-level visual effects, and it does not lack originality and inventiveness, but the ending is not as intellectually or emotionally strong as I would have imagined based on the unfolding of the story.

Thelma & Louise (1991)

Englisch Thelma & Luise is a truly exceptional road movie about two women searching for the meaning of life, all wrapped up in Ridley Scott's excellent direction. It is unconventional, compelling, entertaining, and intellectually very strong.

Das Vermächtnis der Tempelritter (2004)

Englisch Overall, an average action-adventure popcorn flick. From Jerry Bruckheimer, I would expect a bigger action bomb. National Treasure is, in fact, a film that is average in almost all aspects. The story itself is couldn’t be more cliché, but it’s more or less saved by good action moments.

Monster (2003)

Englisch This film will move some, amaze some, shock some, but it certainly won't leave anyone cold.

Saw (2004)

Englisch Saw is nothing by very well and effectively filmed bloodbath. James Wan is definitely not a bad director, he is original, inventive, and dynamic, and for the most part, he manages to maintain an almost lethal pace throughout the entire film. The atmosphere and excellent screenplay save a lot, but I still can't help feeling that it is just cleverly written and effectively filmed ordinary nonsense.
