Gallows Hill - Verdammt in alle Ewigkeit (2013)
Based on what the film is about, I would have expected an atmospheric spectacle, but unfortunately, that was missing. At times, the atmosphere is indeed influenced by how the actors are directed and how the camera is handled. It's as if there was a lack of desire to film something truly terrifying, something in the horror genre, so the creators simply settled for capturing scenes in a way that is somewhat typical for horror films. It's a shame because this film, with its premise and storyline, deserved much better.
Fack ju Göhte (2013)
There are moments here that are almost out of place, present only because they are expected, but that doesn't mean I didn't laugh during this excellent German comedy. In fact, I laughed a lot and enjoyed it. A great gritty character who discovers something more within himself, but mainly an excellent school that beautifully doesn't work, so that something can change. Exactly the kind of light-hearted comedy one needs now and then.
Meshes of the Afternoon (1943)
Pythagasaurus (2011)
Möbius (2011)
The Möbius strip is a phenomenon that was successfully integrated into this film. I was wondering how they would do it, and they almost did it well. The unexpected twist, without explanation, is nice, though I think it could have been done without it. It would have worked better and had greater consistency throughout the film.
Rosa (2011)
Regardless of the story itself, in this case, I was literally thrilled by the slightly theatrical yet very impressive visual aspect. It's like something out of a horror circus, which I find extremely appealing. A different story, something truly horror-themed, would suit it better, yet at times it manages to create a great atmosphere.
The Prince - Only God Forgives (2014)
Nice cast of actors, even though the familiar faces are in smaller roles. Actually, it doesn't really matter because this journey to find the missing daughter is quite enjoyable. Nothing groundbreaking, nothing overly intense, but overall it works quite well, so I am more satisfied than dissatisfied.
Die Schadenfreundinnen (2014)
Oh no... While there are a few good moments and Kate Upton has nice breasts, the way it twists at the end, how the right ones win, is so predictable that it's hard to bear. Just another bit of Hollywood nonsense that doesn't shy away from toilet humor, which in this portrayal, adds nothing worthwhile. Well, that's all I expected, and that's all I got.
Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942)
James Cagney might deserve better recognition, and it would probably be appropriate to consider the time when it was filmed, but this still feels like a heavily promotional film that leans too heavily into pathos in certain moments. But James Cagney shows his mastery. A truly great actor. It's just that the movie's not that great.
Le Petit Dragon (2009)
Bruce Lee is an icon and I just love him. His films are great, it's just a shame there are so few of them. This is a great, humorous homage to a martial arts master, executed with formal excellence, and it doesn't lack wit or perspective at any point. Perhaps some might see it as disrespectful to the master, but I would take it as a major and enjoyable tribute instead.
