Der Gott des Gemetzels (2011)

Englisch The theater play has made it to the big screen. It's nothing unusual, it has happened often in the past. For example, classic Universal horror movies were originally theater plays. "God of Carnage" is a new play that I had the chance to see on stage. I still remember it. Roman Polanski didn't do anything else but transfer the play to the screen. He managed with only four characters and created a drama that criticizes society, our dependence on communication technologies, and our inability to communicate. The performances are great, you can't find fault with them, but it is still mainly a theater play that doesn't bring anything new in its film adaptation. On the other hand, the performance is more magical in the theater, especially when half of the audience in České Budějovice was right on the stage. In the movie, it's just a repeated experience that doesn't stand out in any significant way, but it also doesn't disappoint. Hugo Cabret (2011)

Englisch I was really looking forward to "Hugo", although I have to say that I was really surprised by how many Oscar nominations this film received. It was quite clear that Martin Scorsese wouldn't receive any awards for himself, the Academy doesn't favor him. However, the film is really worth it. It's a beautiful fairytale excursion into history. The story is based - at least partially - on real historical figures and mainly on the history of cinema. It's a celebration of film, its first steps, but mainly a glorification of one great man who was a pioneer of film in his time. Martin Scorsese gave this beautiful story a solid direction, humor, characters that one can relate to, and the magic that maybe was missing in such a "Tintin". The film has excellent characters, both Sacha Baron Cohen, who has to redeem himself in the end, and the child characters who rule the film. It's a pleasant family show that moves you, doesn't offend, but you won't be cheering either. Plus points for Chloë Grace Moretz and Christopher Lee. P.S. Ich liebe dich (2007)

Englisch This movie was pure emotional manipulation, but I didn't mind at all. Strong emotions hit the viewer from the second scene and there are plenty of them. It surprised me even more when Hilary Swank played the ending, as if she didn't really care. However, the great characters make up for it, and for me personally, Gerard Butler is a bonus. Maybe a bit showy, but this Scot can act, and he's good in comedies. He once again proved his comedic talent here. I know, it's not just a comedy, and sometimes you won't laugh at all, but it's also not a drama the whole time. The story has its lighter moments and sometimes turns into a German romantic film, but as a whole, it works quite well. It's just a pity that some characters are not developed enough and are completely neglected in the second half. In Time - Deine Zeit läuft ab (2011)

Englisch I expected a lot from this movie. At first, I thought it might have been directed by Duncan Jones, who was behind the great films "Source Code" and "Moon", but it wasn't. Well, it was noticeable. The plot is not bad. Time has become money and people kill each other to steal their time from one another because it allows them to live forever and look twenty-five. What happens when you are poor your whole life, but suddenly find out that your life will last longer than a century? Well, someone will definitely notice. The film unnecessarily relies on chases and running instead of further developing an interesting idea and playing with it. The second half is basically just an action film that halted the promising sci-fi. Justin and Amanda work well together and hold the film together, but I was really expecting more. It's a shame to waste such a great idea. More: http://www.filmovy-denik.cz/2012/04/diar-milovnika-filmu-c-0003-eastwood.html

Drive (2011)

Englisch Two people amazed me incredibly. First, director Nicolas Winding Refn, who showed me that his film "Barbar" has potential, which, however, was not fully utilized. But with the film "Drive," he convinced me that he simply has it in him. Secondly, it is actor Ryan Gosling, whom I had overlooked, but who showed me that he deserves attention. A great protagonist, with or without a conscience, he is silent, brooding, but still manages to be human when necessary. He carries love within himself, which slowly emerges and must be fought for. A beautiful romantic story in a tough world and tough life of a man who earns a living as a film stuntman, makes extra money as a getaway driver for robbers, and doesn't mind smashing a hoodlum's head to pulp in the presence of his girlfriend. A tough film with a strong story, mainly thanks to great acting performances. I can't help but think that Hollywood needs more European directors. Hangover 2 (2011)

Englisch Second time, but actually the first time. "Hangover in Bangkok" is a continuation of "Hangover in Vegas", but it could easily be considered a copy. Once that principle worked, so we will do it the same way again, because it will work again. The American spirit of commerce has once again shown its dull face. I can't say that I didn't smile at some scenes, but making this film is simply pathetic. The same characters, different animal, Mike Tyson back on the scene, vulgar humor, which doesn't bother me, but mainly the ending, when everything turns out well in the end, even though it seems that everything is totally... you know where. No, I'm not giving it a second chance. I don't like remakes, let alone copies. Trying to get the maximum out of the viewer without added value is the bestiality of today's film world. And do you know what? A third part is coming... Copy of a copy is approaching. More: http://www.filmovy-denik.cz/2012/04/diar-milovnika-filmu-c-0003-eastwood.html

Die Muppets (2011)

Englisch "Muppets" are not something that is very well-known and popular here. Instead, we are more familiar with "Sesame Street," which is a Canadian show. The Muppets are not much different. In America, it is a television treasure, but it doesn't really affect us much. Well, it affected me. I enjoyed the film also because Jason Segel was in it, who is simply great and will only get better. But above all, the relaxed connection between our world and the world of the Muppets works, and it is all complemented by great music and catchy songs. If Americans are good at something, it's musicals. We still have huge gaps in that area. Sometimes silly, sometimes entertaining, for children, but also a lot for adults. A nice story that won't offend, but probably won't excite us that much either. This is where my love for American culture is apparent. The Help (2011)

Englisch When I watched the movie "Black and White World," I wondered how Americans perceive it. I am sure they see it as a drama that depicts a story, but do they realize that this is about their parents, or maybe even themselves? Are they capable of acknowledging that in their relentless freedom they were actually quite nasty and despicable? A nation that is so proud of itself understood equality 40 years ago, yet in some states, they still reject it. But to reassure us that they are progressive, they elect a black - pardon, African American - president, who is still, however, a mixed race. Sometimes I think how great it would be to live in America, but sometimes this idea deeply repulses me. Everything has its merits, but the story of the black women, who are no worse than any of us - and perhaps even better - is truly a powerful testimony that manages not to get lost in the swamp of pathos. The outstanding performances of the actors were rightfully awarded an Oscar or at least a nomination. More: http://www.filmovy-denik.cz/2012/04/diar-milovnika-filmu-c-0003-eastwood.html

Mr. Poppers Pinguine (2011)

Englisch An undemanding comedy that deserves attention, especially for a family afternoon. Children will be excited about the incredibly cute and properly crazy penguins, while parents will be thrilled by the fact that their children will give them a moment of peace. They can relax and maybe even enjoy Jim Carrey, who is still an excellent comedian to me and his facial expressions, movements, just everything he is capable of, truly amaze me. His range of physical comedy is incredibly vast and I admire him for that. The film "Mr. Popper's Penguins" won't leave much of an impression on you, of course, it ends with the necessary happy ending. It's not great art, but at least you'll find out that Angela Lansbury, aka Jessica Fletcher, is still alive and very agile at the age of 87. Letters from Iwo Jima (2006)

Englisch My next encounter with war Eastwood, where the director once again shows that he is much closer to a human story than capturing war. He is not trying to make a great war film, but a great drama. I simply cannot forget some scenes from the movie. The scene with the dog, touching and harsh at the same time, Japanese fanaticism, which ends in mass suicide with a lot of grenades, a bucket of excrement, which means the difference between life and death. Even in war, there is room for happiness. An excellent film that surpassed its doppelgänger "Flags of Our Fathers". I admire Eastwood for not shooting in English, but in the right language, just like Mel Gibson did in "Apocalypto" or "The Passion of the Christ". That's how it should be. And not like the case of the film "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo", which is great in the American version, but why the hell is it set in Sweden when the characters speak English anyway?
