Bába z ledu (2017)

Englisch A well-made story from everyday life about an elderly woman, her two dumb sons and new love springing from ice-cold water. The unusual story shunts along smoothly. Sláma has no problem with handling both the comedic offerings and more serious topics. The duo of Nový/Vízek and Adéla lead the whole film towards an unexpected outcome, which is a middle finger raised against family values and all happy endings. Very good.

Im Netz der Gewalt (2019)

Englisch An extremely important film, because nobody else will make anything like it and therefore I give it slightly higher marks. It is already an artifact, which you realize during the last sentences that Thomas Jane says to the rookie cop who just survived a hellish night. The string of police raids (brilliantly, but in no way originally delivered) shows the dark side of our world, which isn’t gray, but remains black and white; just a lot of work is put into making speaking about it a punishable offense. Did you read 1984 at school?

Entourage - Season 4 (2007) (Staffel)

Englisch An indie series that carries the promise of Cannes and the uncertainty of the next film. Great cameos by Anna Farris, Sid Pollack an Kanye West. The 4th season keeps the quality.

Die Fantastische Reise Des Dr. Dolittle (2020)

Englisch An average kids’ movie with a high standard of special effects. I can’t understand why Downey decided to make a film like this. He isn’t suited to such acting malarkey and the only thing that could explain it would be that his kids are huge Dolittle fans. However, there are a lot of WTF scenes that make it worth watching. One of the weirdest such scenes is the one where they pull bagpipes out of a dragon’s ass.

Vendeta (2011)

Englisch A topic with great potential and excellent actors in the main roles. Outstanding camerawork and production design. But the end product flounders. The dad who wants to kill the three bastards that raped and killed his daughter doesn’t hesitate to pay big money for peace of mind. Understandably. Surprisingly, it’s like several key scenes that events seem to be heading toward are missing; it’s like they’ve been cut. In this respect, I don’t understand the director’s aim. A couple of lapses in logic remain, which seems to indicate that scenes were cut.  Ondruš has the technical know-how, but has to grow in terms of storytelling. However, for a Czech movie, this is absolutely awesome, on a level with overseas films.

Hitting the Apex – Der Kampf um die Spitze (2015)

Englisch A wonderful documentary that came out just as I was stopping watching MotoGP. Rossi’s era was slowly coming to a close and younger predators were vying for his position. Neale sums up the most important aspects, not forgetting to show behind the scenes friction (but still very tastefully cut) that occurred with the arrival of that lunatic Marquez. The central emotional gel is Sic’s death and respect for his legacy. Great shots and every accident hurts. Very nostalgic. Narrated by Tyler Durden, who tells of the metamorphosis of fire into speed.

Christopher Robin (2018)

Englisch In real life, the idea involving vacations would mean constructing a holiday resort in the Hundred Acre Wood, where the rich could go to escape the bustle of the city and take photos of talking plush toys. This is a bizarre film that my heart won’t allow me to give a bad review to. Winnie the Pooh is simply a nice bear and you find yourself crossing your fingers for McGregor to decide to give up on the big corporation and begin reading children’s stories to his daughter. Despite the fact that the plush toys are a little eerily threadbare, the story doesn’t make sense in places and it is rather depressing for a kids’ story, there must be something for everyone in this movie. As I read somewhere here, it’s a film with a small brain but a big heart.

Greyhound – Schlacht im Atlantik (2020)

Englisch Greyhound is a dynamically filmed adaptation of a book about escorting convoys of merchant ships across the Atlantic during the Second World War to territories that airplanes couldn't reach from the mainland. The sometimes nerve-racking maneuvers of giant steel ships are intensified by Neely’s background music with a spine-chilling whale motif. The mocking pack of Nazi wolves pitted against Christ – a real American – does not come across as ridiculously as you might think. Tom “Covid Survivor" Hanks again thoroughly relishes his role of a professional, logical captain, first doing what has to be done, then humbly leafing through the Bible, and then going to bed. Strong emphasis on detail, good length. The special effects were not consistently good.

The Old Guard (2020)

Englisch Greg Rucka just reels off stories like this, one after the other. The Old Guard has excellent subject matter. The idea has potential, but the product doesn’t fully realize it. The action is fairly solid, but the music-video-style visuals are disappointing and the R&B soundtrack kills every other scene. Charlize looks great with an ax and, if they had focused more on the past, this could have turned out to be exceptionally good movie. As it stands, it is just a reasonably good TV movie that promises a more entertaining sequel.

Angry Birds 2 - Der Film (2019)

Englisch I watched it half-heartedly between three screaming kids, but the scene in the toilet where the guard gets pissed on and then smashed against the sink and urinal with his access card really got to me.
