Valery Balayan was born in 1960. He started his career in cinema at the Lenfilm studios as a handy-man. In 1989 graduated from the department of non-fiction cinema at the Higher Courses for Scriptwriters and Directors. Over the years he wrote scripts for more than 40 documentaries. He shot over 60 documentaries himself as a director. Since 2003 he has been teaching drama at VGIK, since 2012 teaches a class of documentary directing and producing at the Higher School of Journalism.
