Biografie
Kevin Kline is an Academy Award® winner (A Fish Called Wanda) and two-time Tony Award winner, garnering the top honors for his stellar performances on both screen and stage.
In film, aside from winning the 1988 Oscar® and the 2008 Screen Actors Guild Award for HBO's As You Like It, Kline is a five-time Golden Globe nominee for his role opposite Meryl Streep in the critically acclaimed Sophie's Choice, based on William Styron's bestseller, and the comedies Dave, In & Out, Soapdish and the drama De-Lovely. He received two Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for his performances in Life As A House and Cyrano de Bergerac on PBS' Great Performances, which brought him a Primetime Emmy nomination for Best Actor. Additionally, Kline received two BAFTA nominations, one for Best Actor for A Fish Called Wanda and one for Most Outstanding Newcomer to Film in Sophie's Choice.
For his performance in Trade, Kline received the 2007 CineMerit Award at the Munich Film Festival. He was honored with a Career Tribute at the 1997 Gotham Independent Film Awards. In 2004, he received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. That year he was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame.
He has collaborated with Director Lawrence Kasdan six times including: Silverado; The Big Chill; I Love You To Death; Grand Canyon; French Kiss; and Darling Companion. He recently starred in Robert Redford's The Conspirator. His other film credits include: Cry Freedom; The Ice Storm; A Midsummer Night's Dream; The Anniversary Party; Fierce Creatures; Wild Wild West; The Emperor's Club; A Prairie Home Companion; The Extra Man; Chaplin and Trade. He received critical praise for his first-ever French language performance in Caroline Bottaro's Queen to Play, opposite Sandrine Bonnaire.
On stage, Kline is the recipient of two Tony Awards and two Drama Desk Awards for 1978's On the Twentieth Century and 1981's The Pirates of Penzance. He also won an Obie Award for Outstanding Achievement by an actor for The Pirates of Penzance after the play had a successful run at The Public Theater before transferring to Broadway.
For the first production of Hamlet he won another Obie Award for Sustained Achievement in Theatre and for the second production of the play, which he also directed, he received five Drama Desk nominations, including best director and actor nominations. He later co-directed a televised version of the production for the PBS Great Performances Series.
He was nominated for a Tony Award and won a Drama Desk award for his performance as Falstaff in the Lincoln Center Theater's production of Shakespeare's Henry IV. He also received the William Shakespeare Award for Classical Theatre by the Shakespeare Theatre Company, which recognizes an artist who has made a significant contribution to classical theatre in America. He was the first American actor to receive the Sir John Gielgud Golden Quill Award.
In 2007, he was honored with the Lucille Lortel Award for Lifetime Achievement. He received the Outer Critics Circle Award for his critically acclaimed performance in Cyrano de Bergerac on Broadway. It was also Kline's second staged production to air on PBS' Great Performances Series. He won rave reviews for his Broadway performance in Shaw's Arms and the Man directed by John Malkovich as well as Michael Weller's Loose Ends, directed by Alan Schneider. He starred in Gerry Gutierrez's production of Chekhov's Ivanov at the Lincoln Center.
At The Public's Shakespeare in the Park, Kline has also appeared opposite Meryl Streep in The Seagull, in Mother Courage and Her Children. He has been involved with The Public Theater for more than three decades during which he has played numerous Shakespearean characters, including the title roles in King Lear, Richard III and Henry V. Additional credits include Duke Vincentio in Measure for Measure, Benedick in in Much Ado About Nothing and the title role in two productions of Hamlet.
The Juilliard graduate made his Broadway debut playing Vershinin in Anton Chekhov's The Three Sisters for John Houseman's The Acting Company, of which he is a founding member.
