Biografie

The son of Irish emigrants, he began his career at the Royal National Theatre with ‘The Pillowman’ in 2003. He wrote a trilogy of plays set in the village of Calway (‘The Beauty Queen of Leenane’, ‘A Skull in Connemara’ and ‘The Lonesome West’), and another trilogy set in the Aran Islands (‘The Cripple of Inishman’, ‘The Lieutenant of Inishmore’ and ‘The Banshees of Inisheer’). In film, in 2006 he won the Oscar for directing the short film Six Shooter, and he made his feature film debut with In Bruges (2008). Later he directed Seven Psychopaths (2012) and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017), which won two Oscars. The Banshees of Inisherin scooped this year’s Volpi Cup for Best Actor for Colin Farrell at the Venice Film Festival.
