Pituka Ortega-Heilbron

Biografie

President and founder of Hypatia Films Inc, she has written, produced, directed, and co-directed several feature and short films, including La Ruta and Panama Canal Stories. Her award-winning documentary, Los Puños de una Nación, was defined as one of the most important Latin American films of the last half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st. In 2021, together with her daughter and partner Marcela Heilbron, she worked with Claire Denis on the film Stars at Noon, shot in Panama and produced locally by her company, which won the Grand Prix at Cannes 2022. As Executive Director of the Panama International Film Festival and its IFF Panama Foundation, she has guided a platform for filmmakers in the region to show their stories through cinema. Under her leadership, it was created the first and only fund in Latin America for women filmmakers, called Su Mirada. She was chosen as one of the most powerful women in Central America by Forbes in 2020 and 2021, and she was named a Knight by the French government with L’Ordre National du Mérite in 2021.
