Film director, scriptwriter and actor. He was one of the most famous German silent filmmakers after World War I. Son of a German father and Jewish mother, Schünzel started his career as an actor in 1916 at the age of 29, directing his first film in 1919. During his long career, he acted in more than 120 films and directed more than 40. Though he was Jewish, the popularity of his work allowed him to stay in Germany until the second half of the 1930’s when he was finally forced into exile and left for Hollywood. There and on Broadway, he workedas an actor through the 1940’s, before returning to Germany.
