Rejoice, for the shockproof perennial star Santo is back with yet another of his manic adventures. Santo vs the Mummies of Guanajuato is notable for being Santo’s most popular and highest grossing film. This time around the Man in the Silver Mask has to take on a whole army of rampaging mummies led by the resurrected corpse of the legendary wrestler and a powerful sorcerer by the name of Satan (!). And rest assured, that together with Blue Demon and his buddy Mil Máscaras they will turn the grand finale into some of the finest Mexican Mummy Mashing ever committed to celluloid. Englisch Santo vs. the Mummies of Guanajuato is an ingenuously eye-catching tourism promo for the titular city intertwined with a luchador movie, so all of the absurd characters are obliged to listen to folk performances, chase each other in the historical city centre, pose in front of local landmarks and, of course, talk about which hotel offers a good night’s sleep and where the great restaurants are. All of this happens while reanimated mummies run around and fight with the luchador stars Blue Demon and Thousand Masks in a disturbingly futile manner. In the series of films with El Santo, this delightfully straightforward and naïve flick is a variation on Waiting for Godot in which the legendary wrestler only talks for a long time, which makes his eventual arrival on the scene (in a convertible with his cape fluttering nonchalantly from his neck) and the restoration of order even more spectacular.
