In the world of Anmaere, north of the city of Whithren, wild horses run through the moorlands and up the coast. These horses are the city’s most valuable export, and as a result are hunted, trapped, sold & shipped across the sea once a year. For those in Whithren, this trade creates exciting possibilities: the chance to escape their constantly sweltering city to head across the sea. Meanwhile, in a small house just north of the city, a line of women pass a single dream through the generations. They inherit it from mother to daughter; a memory of a time where magic and myth were alive in the world. The Wanting Mare is a visionary work from Nicholas Ashe Bateman blending science-fiction, drama, fantasy and romance in lyrical style to create a bold and atmospheric new cinematic world. Englisch This is so masturbatory that the local fans of bloated art will be in heaven. On the one hand, it’s a remarkable and impressive piece of work – a cheap movie shot on location and in warehouses that looks truly spectacular. The creative team used a lot of digital effects (somewhere I read that it was five years of work) to create a very atmospheric dystopian world that knows how to draw you in and arouse curiosity. On the other hand, Bateman dives too deep into lyricism for my taste, to the point that he basically refuses to tell a story. I can get something out of it, and it did evoke some feelings, but I would have enjoyed it more if, among those interesting sets and that intense atmosphere, something that made sense on a basic level took place.
