Édes Anna

Budapest, the autumn of 1919. After the fall of the Commune, the Vizys try to continue everything as they did before. They hire a new house-maid, the silent and diligent Anna. Mrs. Vizy thoroughly exploits the girl but she does not protest. She tries to get acquainted with city life. She even has a suitor, Báthory, the honest chimney sweeper, yet she falls in love with the nephew of her "honourable" bosses. One night, Jancsi seduces her and later abandons her. When he learns about her pregnancy, he gives her money for the operation. The Vizys give a pompous dinner. Jancsi is courting a young girl. Anna, humiliated and wounded in her female pride, cannot comprehend what has happened to her. During the night, she stabs the Vizys to death. (Verleiher-Text)
