This poetic film presents the ballad of the boys who turned into stags, by the associative means of music, painting and folk art. At the same time it is a memorial to the martyrs of the 1944 Sátor-aljaújhely prison revolt and shows its butchery reflected through the fate of three brothers. The hot-headed Zorán leads the prisoners when they disarm the guards and break out. A German machine-gunner, a Hungarian soldier and a civilian shoot at them instantly. The level-headed Bálint stays in the prison and undertakes the revolt with his mate, Markó. Fire is set to the haystack where the youngest, János, the painter and his sweetheart are hiding. Etel, who miscarried her baby tries to revive the invulnerable couple untouched by the fire. János's visions come to life: pictures of captivity, destruction and metamorphosis. Zorán is running as the wonderstag, drunk with freedom. (Verleiher-Text)
