Fausto, ein ehemaliger Offizier, verlor vor sieben Jahren sein Augenlicht, als er mit einer Bombe hantierte. Er ist sarkastisch und verbirgt seine Verbitterung hinter Aggressivität. Giovanni, ein junger Adjutant, wird beauftragt, Fausto auf einer Reise nach Neapel zu begleiten, deren Anlass im Dunkeln bleibt. Giovanni nimmt verblüfft zur Kenntnis, dass der Blinde alles zu “sehen” scheint, was sich auf der Straße abspielt – besonders die Frauen, die er anhand ihres Dufts charakterisiert. Trotz seines Gebrechens ist Fausto eitel: Er ist stolz auf seinen Gang, missachtet seine Blindheit und gibt sich wie ein gesunder Mensch. Entsprechend weist er jedes Mitleid brüsk zurück – und widersetzt sich in geradezu boshafter Weise der Liebe Saras, eines schönen jungen Mädchens, das ihn seit dem 15. Lebensjahr liebt. Ihr Foto liegt in seinem Koffer neben einem Revolver. In Neapel trifft Fausto Vincenzo, einen ebenfalls blinden Mann, den er seit Langem zu kennen scheint. Eines Tages sprechen Fausto und Vincenzo davon, in der kommenden Nacht ihr geheimnisvolles Vorhaben, für das sie sich getroffen haben, endlich zu verwirklichen: Sie wollen ihrem Leben ein Ende setzen. I have already watched the American remake, and in comparison to it, the Italian drama holds up better. I have raised my rating from the original four stars to five. This is what an honest film looks like. Dino Risi knows how to work with human emotions very well and handles the screenplay in a way that does not slide into cheap sentimentality, even though the story of a disabled officer who has lost his sight directly invites it. First and foremost, it is a drama about love, but also about coming to terms with one's disability. The musical component is very good, and the main melody resonated with me for a long time. Vittorio Gassman did a great job in his difficult role; his cynical and bitter officer Fausto is brilliantly played, and the actor rightfully received a whole series of festival awards for it. What I appreciate about the film is its realistically conceived environment and the fact that the director was not afraid to incorporate many dark elements into his film. Overall impression: 90%.
