Der gelangweilte Graf Zaroff findet nur noch einen Nervenkitzel bei der Jagd auf Menschen. Auf seiner Insel nimmt er zunächst Schiffbrüchige auf und eröffnet nach einem kurzen Vorsprung die Jagd, um sie dann mit Hunden durch den Dschungel zu jagen und sie mit Pfeil und Bogen zur Strecke zu bringen. "Oh, very well. If you choose to play the leopard… I shall hunt you like a leopard“, sagt Graf Zaroff mit eisig ruhiger Stimme. In seinen Augen flammt ein finsteres Feuer auf und die unglaublich fesselnde Jagd kann beginnen. Graf Zaroff - Genie des Bösen ist ein toller Film. Man merkt, dass es die Arbeit der Autoren von King Kong und die weiße Frau ist. Noch vor der Geschichte von "dem großen Affen“ haben sie einen abenteuerlichen Actionfilm/Thriller gedreht, den es noch nie zuvor gegeben hat. Im Jahr 1932, als anderswo ziemlich einfache Filme gedreht wurden, hat ein fanatischer Graf in Übersee nichtsahnende Passagiere von gestrandeten Schiffen gejagt. Er hat auf sie mit Pfeilen und mit einem Gewehr geschossen, ihre Köpfe in Alkohol eingelegt oder als Trophäen an die Wand gehängt… Es ist einfach etwas Unvorstellbares. Dank der zeitlosen Regie, der magischen Tricks, mit denen der exotische Dschungel auf der Insel geschaffen wurde, und der bombastischen Musik von Max Steiner ist ein Adrenalin-Film entstanden, der auch nach achtzig Jahren (unglaublich!) immer noch Pep hat. Fünf Sterne. Und ich möchte den Film als DVD haben, YouTube reicht nicht.

In some respects it’s already a bit ridiculous (exaggerated acting, predictable development and somewhat obtuse characters), but formally, it’s a very spectacular and cleverly constructed adventure, where every introduced figure or motif has its key justification. The final chase through the inhospitable jungle is especially excellent, by dividing the action into two parallel storylines, repeating spatial frames or a meaningful summary of the earlier outlined motifs, it aspires to the title of the most successful and intense sequence of the early sound film era. A great warm-up for the creators of King Kong.

The Most Dangerous Game must not be treated as something that is really old and can no longer impress viewers today. On the contrary. I think that some of the scenes were shot in a way that the filmmakers would not be able to do today. Yes, today it would be more hectic and faster, but this effect would not be achieved. The film is not much of a horror, but I definitely consider it very good.
