An introverted teenager, Filip, who loves to quote Seneca, falls in love with his lovely classmate while picking hops. Beautiful Hanka moves to his provisional sanctuary in the attic, but she remains just a friend of the idealistic boy for a long time. Seemingly honest heartthrob, Honza, who is a prototype of a careerist conforming to the regime, tries to seduce the girl. After failing and embarrassing himself in front of his followers, he comes up with a malicious scheme. This evergreen with its widely popular songs – inspired by the American hit, West Side Story – discusses, with great wit, the official phraseology as well as the Communist pseudo-morals. One of the guitarists of the trio is played by Josef Laufer. (Febiofest)

Englisch Another one of my Czech classics that I had for a long time. But I fixed this too and finally saw "Starci na chmelu" (Old Men in the Hops). I know the songs, but when I saw the story and heard those fantastic acting performances, which are incredibly natural because they speak as if they were born to it, it's just amazing. It was bold for its time and it still works today. ()

Englisch It's not a groundbreaking and superlative achievement in the rich history of Czech cinema (not to mention the overblown 1960s), and I don't think I would ever want to watch this peculiar episodic romance again, but no one can deny that the film was at the very start of the musical genre in our country, that it has excellent performances and that those few melodies have taken root in our modern culture with seemingly unbreakable force. In terms of playfulness and colour, it may not be on a par with the famous foreign competitors of its time, but thanks to the format and its ingenious grasp of the simple plot, Green Gold will warm your heart almost equally and permanently.
