1938 im faschistischen Italien: Marcello Clerici, geachteter Professor der Philosophie, hat sich mit der schönen, aber geistig schlichten Giulia verlobt. Er ist davon überzeugt, dass er als 13-Jähriger einen Mann erschossen hat, der ihn zu verführen versuchte, und wird seitdem von Schuldgefühlen geplagt. Clerici ist ein überzeugter Faschist geworden und bietet dem faschistischen Geheimdienst an, seinen ehemaligen Professor Quadri zu beschatten, der jetzt als engagierter Antifaschist in Paris lebt. Der Geheimdienst gibt Clerici den Auftrag, Quadri zu ermorden. In Paris besucht Clerici mit seiner Verlobten Quadri und verliebt sich sofort in dessen junge Frau Anna. Entsetzt muss er erleben, dass Anna versucht, seine Frau zu verführen, und ihn als faschistischen Spion entlarvt. Indem er den beiden Frauen vorschlägt, sich zu zweit Paris anzuschauen, bereitet Clerici das Attentat auf Quadri vor. Doch Anna bleibt bei ihrem Ehemann. In seinem Auto sitzend, beobachtet Clerici, wie Quadri und Anna von faschistischen Agenten ermordet werden. Im Juli 1943, als in Rom die Bevölkerung den Sturz des faschistischen Regimesfeiert, vollzieht Clerici als echter Konformist einen erneuten Gesinnungswandel: Er schließt sich den siegreichen Antifaschisten an und diffamiert öffentlich den Mann, der ihn für Mussolinis Partei gewonnen hatte. An excellent political thriller that has terrifying characters, including the main role, brilliantly portrayed by the genius Jean-Louis Trintignant. It is a film that is thrilling, cruel, and psychological, striving to get to the heart of the matter at all costs, even if we don't like it. Who are we? What are our convictions? And how is it possible to change them, if it's possible at all. Interesting questions arise while watching.

The Conformist is a visually gluttonous portrait of a man who escapes viewers as well as himself in a fragmented mosaic of distorted memories, from which he tries to piece together an answer to how he got into his current situation, when for the first time he clearly finds himself at a moral crossroads between his own desires and his voluntary collaboration with the regime. With its non-linear narrative and symbolist images, The Conformist confronts viewers with a complicated labyrinth that is, however, an eloquent depiction of the title character and his inner turmoil, as he tries to conceal his trauma with an absurd effort to be normal.

I was going for the theme, not at all expecting the visual delights that awaited me. Seeing the Bay-esque camera shots in the 1970s is breathtaking. The lighting and mise-en-scene work, while maddeningly stagey and mannerist in places, is really inventive on the other hand and adds to the importance of each scene. I'm sympathetic to the film's position, in which a man without an ideal is a natural servant of evil, and I'm quite interested in its further development to the current era of late capitalism, where ideas are again commodified, creating a new variant of conformity.
