Der junge König Ahmad besitzt 365 Frauen, 50 Paläste und unbegrenzte Macht – trotzdem sieht er in seinem Leben keinen Sinn. Als er es sich zur Aufgabe macht, sein Volk zufrieden zu stellen, schaltet sich ein heimtückischer Großwesir ein. Der junge König Ahmad besitzt 365 Frauen, 50 Paläste und unbegrenzte Macht – trotzdem sieht er in seinem Leben keinen Sinn. Als er eines Tages die vielen Hinrichtungen satthat und Andeutungen macht, eine humanere Regierung anzustreben, stößt er bei seinem Großwesir Jaffar auf Unverständnis. Nur mit Gewalt, Verachtung und Schrecken könne man der Herr der Erde werden. Ahmad möchte hingegen nur ein zufriedenes Volk und folgt schließlich Jaffars Rat, sich bei Nacht unter die Menschen zu mischen, sie genau zu beobachten und zu prüfen. Doch damit tappt er in dessen Falle. Seiner edlen Kleider entledigt und nicht imstande, einen Beweis für seinen königlichen Status zu erbringen, ist es Jaffar ein Leichtes, ihn ins Gefängnis werfen zu lassen.
Mit Hilfe des Diebes Abu gelingt Ahmad jedoch die Flucht nach Basra, wo er sich in die schöne Tochter des Sultans verliebt. Auch Jaffar begehrt die Prinzessin und sorgt mit einem weiteren Trick dafür, dass ihr Vater sie – gegen ihren Willen – ihm selbst verspricht. Um Ahmad auszuschalten, lässt er ihn mit seinen Zauberkräften erblinden und verwandelt Abu in einen Hund. Als er mit der Prinzessin davonsegelt, nehmen die beiden Freunde mit einem Boot die Verfolgung auf. Durch einen von Jaffar heraufbeschworenen Sturm kentert ihr Boot, und die beiden werden getrennt. Nun liegt es an Abu, Bagdad von der Herrschaft des Großwesirs zu befreien. Doch bis dahin muss er noch viele Abenteuer mit verzauberten Teppichen, Dschinns, fliegenden Pferden und riesigen Monstern bestehen. (arte)
