WandaVision

WandaVision is a show that's great to talk about with friends, but not that much fun to watch. It's just that the fact that there's so much to talk about and discuss (be it aside from form, style, future implications for the MCU, theorizing over references and hints, there's no shortage of it; it's a shame that these theories and hints end up being more interesting than what they turn out to be) makes it considerably deceptive in the flesh and gives the impression that it's actually entertaining. But it's not, the fun is purely on that meta level of "around WandaVision and not about or in it". (05.03.2021)

I didn't expect Marvel to become drama anymore either. Ironically, the best episodes are the first two, where at least the humor works, but once it switches to a more serious note and starts discussing scientific, physical, and family bullshit, I found the show incredibly maddening. The action is only there in the last episode and it sucked. It felt like a cheap teen soap from the 2000's and it's boring as fuck on top of that. I fell asleep during four episodes out of nine and nothing has managed to do that in a long time. I suffered so much that I couldn't make it through more than two episodes in a day, and they are only half an hour long. Nothing for me and I'm honestly relieved it's over. 4/10. (12.03.2021)

Although the Westview chapter may seem insignificant to the overall development of the universe, it is precisely an excursion into the overseas history of television comedy that definitively surpasses genre boundaries for the first time. Yes, in crucial moments, it is once again a Marvel movie that must have action or a battle, but complaining about that quality is the same as criticizing an episode of a series for focusing on a specific theme rather than foreign characters or plots. I am fascinated by how precisely the individual subgenres are captured, how quickly I am able to tune in to each new game, and how quickly it can freeze even disturbing images. Elizabeth Olsen deserved to steal the show for herself in Avengers: Age of Ultron or Avengers: Infinity War, and I am very glad that the leadership of the MCU took this desire to heart. (28.06.2022)

A balanced, visually captivating spectacle with the powerful theme of family values. The unbelievable acting performances by Bethany and, mainly, Elizabeth Olsen does much to improve this first Marvel sitcom. The experimental nature of storytelling is entertaining and the bar is set very high. (05.03.2021)

Das ausgereifteste der einzelnen Projekte von MCU. Zusammen mit Wanda und Vision ist es eine Art kurzer Abriss der Geschichte des amerikanischen Fernsehens, die jeder Mainstream-Zuschauer kennenlernen sollte, damit er weiß, wovon er ein Teil ist. (06.03.2021)

The elementary logic does falter mightily, especially in the end, when many characters just stand idly by as it suits the creators, but otherwise, as an original pun from the world of comic pages, which already encompasses the history of the film medium, it’s quite entertaining and above all brisk. The half-hour formats are just right, and it's nice to focus on the almost ancient tragedy of Wanda, which works thanks to the good actors (the heroine's final dilemma resonates more strongly than the finale of Spider-Man: No Way Home). The special effects are pretty lousy in places and the reveal of the villain's identity won't get you out of your chair, but WandaVision will guarantee you a pleasant afternoon – the condition is, of course, that you like the MCU and are a fan of genre exhibitions that few people dare to do nowadays. 70 % (05.01.2022)

Obwohl ich alle MCU-Kinofilme gesehen habe, habe ich Serienproduktionen bisher (aus Zeitgründen) gemieden, aber im Fall von WandaVision habe ich beschlossen, eine Ausnahme zu machen, da mich das ansprechende Thema und die äußerst sympathische Besetzung gefesselt haben. (Spoiler-Alarm!) "Wandas Vision" ist zweifellos ein Serienprojekt der Superlative und ein unkonventioneller Genre-Hybrid in einem - im Laufe von neun Episoden bekommt der Zuschauer eine traditionelle Sitcom, eine Superhelden-Romanze sowie ein düsteres Fantasy- und Familiendrama zu sehen. Im Gegensatz zu den MCU-Filmen, die sich hauptsächlich auf auffällige (und für manche vielleicht übertriebene) audiovisuelle Elemente verlassen, versucht WandaVision, ehrlich mit den Charakteren zu arbeiten und in die Tiefe zu gehen - auch wenn die Filmemacher manchmal die Emotionen übertrieben haben, habe ich es ihnen absolut abgekauft. Paul Bettany und Elizabeth Olsen waren beide sehr sympathisch, und die Chemie zwischen ihnen hat toll funktioniert, wie ich schon in früheren Filmen gesehen habe. In den Nebenrollen wurde ihnen von Kat Dennings, Teyonah Parris und der (manchmal etwas theatralischen) Kathryn Hahn gut assistiert. Die Motivation der Figuren, die die Handlung vorantreibt, hat mich fasziniert (und in gewisser Weise auch bewegt). Abgesehen davon haben mir die kleinen (aber dennoch befriedigenden) Verbindungen zu früheren MCU-Projekten gefallen, und auch der Aufbau der Hexenmythologie hat mir gefallen. Trotz einiger schwächerer Momente bin ich am Ende mit der Serie zufrieden. (05.03.2021)

Excellent Paul Bettany and especially Elizabeth Olsen in what seems to be an entertaining and original series in which you can enjoy various winks and references to events from the MCU and X-Men. As always, it gives rise to discussions and theories as to what each event refers to and what it will lead to in the future. However, the series finale fully shows that this is another generic Marvel story all the way, only spread out into 9 episodes. I wouldn’t mind the nice, but logically cheaper visuals compared to the movies, but what is much harder to see past is the fact that, apart from the three main characters, the rest of the acting performances are straight out of the dumbest DC series from the CW.
