A poor musician with a horde of hungry children at home sets off into the world to look for work. He is wandering through the country until he reaches a pub where, just at that moment, they are celebrating a village fair. The musician plays to the visitors but the publican rewards him with only a piece of old bread for his performance. An elderly magician takes pity on the musician and presents him with a magical table-napkin which serves delicacies all by itself and a little donkey from which ducats are pouring. On the way home, the musician stops at the same pub and good-naturedly displays the magic gifts. But the dishonest publican exchanges them for ordinary ones. At home, the musician disappoints the entire family: the table-napkin doesn't serve any food and not even a copper coin falls out of the donkey. The poor man realizes who robbed him off the old man's gifts. He goes back with another old magician's gift - a stick. The stick gives the owner a good thrashing and the greedy man readily returns everything. On his return home, the musician makes a feast for the entire village. The old man ascends to the sky to look around and see if anybody needs his help. (Verleiher-Text)

Knüppel aus dem Sack gehört nicht zu den Märchen, auf die ich mich jedes Jahr freue. Ich muss es nicht unbedingt sehen. Trotzdem schaue ich es mir meisten an und bin jedes Mal überrascht, wie nett und lieb es ist… Der Film Spiel mit dem Teufel ist zwar noch besser, er hat aber nicht den perfekten Nachtwächter Josef Hlinomaz.

"Warum sind die Leute so gemein?" Knüppel aus dem Sack veranschaulicht auf anschauliche Weise, wie gute und ehrliche Menschen in einer Welt voller Bösewichte und gieriger Menschen hart getroffen werden können. Ladislav Pešek war perfekt in der Rolle des naiven und vertrauensvollen Musikers, ebenso wie Josef Beyvl, der als gieriger und bösartiger Gastwirt ebenfalls hervorragend war. Für die damalige Zeit bietet der Film gut gemachte Animationen mit dem Knüppel, und das Titellied ist ein echter Ohrwurm. Dennoch macht das Märchen auf mich einen eher durchschnittlichen Eindruck im Vergleich zu anderen tschechischen Filmen, was an der manchmal "dummen Naivität" der Hauptfigur und der Figur des magischen Großvaters liegen mag, der die Geschichte zu sehr beeinflusst. Die abschließende "Knüppelparade" war jedoch super. P. S. "Hey, die Welt ist schön."

I simply like this fairytale. To some extent, Ladislav Pešek is responsible for that, as he is excellent here, but mainly it is the naivety of the beautiful struggle between good and evil, where the zoo has the upper hand for a long time, but in the end, good still triumphs. Josef Beyvl and the animators then showcase something truly magnificent in the spanking sequence, showing that animation and acting can be believably intertwined.
