Das Licht geht an, Revolver werden gezogen und eines der dramatischsten und folgeschwersten Kapitel in der Geschichte der USA beginnt. Robert Redfort und Dustin Hoffman spielen die Reporter der “Washington Post”, die sich an diese Story heranwagen und weit – für viele zu weit – gehen. It's hard to catch all the connections, but the reward is so sweet that I'm still enjoying it now. The effort of Hoffman and Redford is incredibly infectious, so whenever they set out to search for something, I would go after a new lead just as well. Have a safe journey to the dark garages, friends.

Über Watergate habe ich ungefähr so viel gewusst, wie in den ersten zwei Sätzen vom offiziellen Text des Vertreibers steht. Ich habe gedacht, dass es mir reichen wird. Das war aber nicht der Fall. In Die Unbestechlichen kam ein Name nach dem anderen. Nach ungefähr 30 Minuten konnte ich mich in der Handlung noch halbwegs orientieren, nach einer Stunde hatte ich keine Ahnung mehr, wer, mit wem, für wen oder gegen wen… Vor dem Ende ist mir zwar einiges klar geworden, aber ich kam mir immer noch wie ein verlorenes Kind in einem schwarzen Wald vor. Und das Finale hat irgendwie ganz gefehlt. Oder kam es nur mir so vor? Der Film hat eine wirkungsvolle Stimmung und glaubhafte Schauspielleistungen (der Chefredakteur von Jason Robards hat mir sehr gefallen). Falls ich irgendwann über Watergate mehr erfahren werde, sehe ich mir diesen Film gern noch einmal an. Vorerst gebe ich dreieinhalb Sterne.

Basically, a flawlessly constructed tale about the search for information and the reconstruction of factual events that always stays a couple of steps ahead of the viewer, holding the tension, even though its outcome is very well known. In addition to the precise dialogues, the performances and the diverse ways of obtaining information, which enclose the protagonists in an increasingly strong outer loop, another captivating thing is its highly progressive style that draws the viewer’s attention to two equally focused planes (most of the scenes in the newsroom combine the personal investigations with news broadcasts and the surrounding noise), or the way it deviates markedly from the characters, highlighting their information overload or the feeling of being followed and in danger. One of the best movies of the 1970s, which, despite its conversational nature, can be rewatched to find new filmmaking pearls.

Incredibly powerful film that, although portrays the whole Watergate scandal in a Hollywood light, does not lose any of its significance. Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman completely dominate this film and showcase their mastery, which is appreciated even after many years. A film and an event that America should never forget.
