Edmond Dantès (Gérard Depardieu) sitzt seit zwei Jahrzehnten in dem berüchtigten Gefängnis Chateau d’If. Als junger Mann war er von seiner Verlobung mit der schönen Mercedes weg verhaftet worden. Wegen Hochverrats wanderte er in den Kerker. Eines Tages gelingt es einem Mitgefangenen (Georges Moustaki), Kontakt zu dem Isolierten aufzunehmen. Er vertraut Dantès an, dass er das Opfer einer Verschwörung wurde und verrät ihm das Versteck eines Schatzes. Dantès bricht aus. An actor, a master, supported in television conditions by the royal dubbing led by Miroslav Donutil. This famous story of revenge is maturing in a series co-production into a masterpiece, where Edmond Dantes can thoroughly enjoy every opponent and gain not only a feeling of satisfaction but also love. An under-appreciated work in its time, to which I gladly return.

Excellent television adaptation of a great novel that simply captivated me. Gérard Depardieu is a fantastic actor and here he proves it to the fullest, easily surpassing most of the other actors, who are themselves legends of European cinema. It's a great story that doesn't age and it shows that revenge is a justice that is often more just than the law.
