Late one full moonlit night, a woman stands alone on the roadside waiting for her husband to return to their broken-down car. Ich will es kaum glauben. Ein Mensch, der für den durchschnittlichen Durchschnitt der Howling Serie verantwortlich ist, hat dieses außerordentlich gelungene Stück gedreht?! Ja, er hat es gedreht... und mit diesem fast vergessenen Juwel meine Augen begeistert. Der Anfang der 80er Jahre zeigte sich hier auf die beste Weise. Blutige Morde, Vergewaltigungen und schmerzhafte Verwandlungen von Menschen in Monstrositäten ohne einen Hauch von Übertreibung und Humor. Der Film hat eine solide Besetzung, eine unglaublich bedrohliche Atmosphäre, beeindruckende Musik und eine von Geheimnissen umgebene Stadt mitten im tiefen Wald. Alles deutet auf Werwölfe hin, aber die Wahrheit liegt woanders. Das Ende ist eine große Überraschung. So stelle ich mir einen ehrlichen Horrorfilm vor.

The horror film The Beast Within is one of those gems that can amaze, even though I didn't know much about it beforehand. Yet it's one of those films that should be talked about, because they may be retro, but they're still good and in some ways have lost nothing. You won't this dense of an atmosphere for the entire duration of the film anywhere else. And that's the great virtue of a film that's almost forty years old.
