In this heartfelt Lithuanian drama from Ernestas Jankauskas, we find Sasha, a twelve-year-old boy, desperately wishing to one day leave the orphanage he calls home and become part of a family. Spurned by his biological father, Sasha's boundless, some would say rambunctious, personality has kept him going, but the prospective parents that come to the orphanage have so far passed him by for other, more mild-mannered children. It is here that we meet Jurga and Tomas, a happily married couple that have come to the orphanage hoping to adopt a little girl, instead find themselves drawn to Sasha. Faced with a choice between what they'd planned for and what could be, the trio navigate their future. Poignant and tender, Sasha Was Here explores both the nature and possibilities of family and how both are often what we make it. (Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival)
