Der russische Staatszirkus ist in den USA auf Tournee. Vladimir, Saxophonist im Zirkusorchester, ist geblendet vom westlichen Konsumparadies und ohne genau zu wissen warum, bittet er im exklusiven Kaufhaus Bloomingdales um politisches Asyl. Nachdem sich das Chaos aus aufgelösten Funktionären, hektischen Kaufhausangestellten und nervösen Fernsehreportern aufgelöst hat, steht Vladimir nun da – hilflos und allein in einer feindlichen Umwelt. Doch dann finden sich bald Freunde. Lionel, der farbige Wachmann, der Exilkubaner Orlando und Lucia, die italienische Verkäuferin, helfen ihm zu überleben. Vladimir hat eine zweite Heimat gefunden – sein Moskau in New York. (Verleiher-Text)

I thought it would be really American, but it's kind of independent. It's clear that there was a difference between the USA and the USSR of that time, but it's not presented in any exaggerated way. There are problems in the USA too, although they are not emphasized here. The overall tone of the film is very pleasant, mainly thanks to the great Robin Williams, who put in all he could into the character. Some jokes are pleasant, but not overdone. Similarly, the dramatic aspect is balanced.
