Jack is an educated and well versed magazine editor living in Los Angeles. Grappling with the natural release of his childhood and the promise of his forthcoming adulthood, he is hit hard by the news of his father's death. In a violent and horrific car crash, his father has perished while his mother has survived. He returns to his hometown of Denver, Colorado to nurse his mother through her physical and emotional injuries. During his stay at home, he uncovers long buried secrets and lies within his family history, his friends and his very identity. Jack Goes Home is not a story on film, but a trauma on film. So, don’t expect horror, but rather be prepared for an uncomfortable drama where you’ll be haunted by the demons of the very unlikeable main characters. I’m even surprised how much I enjoyed it – though “enjoy” is the wrong word, “interest” is more appropriate. Despite the strong detachment (mainly due to the main character), I couldn’t stop feeling curious about how the story would unfold. First-time director Thomas Dekker knows how to strike notes of psychological discomfort pretty well, and the scary scenes he manages to pull out here and there are also effective. Unfortunately, nothing revolutionary comes out of all that, not enough to get four stars, but I’m closer to that rating than I would have expected before watching it.

Thomas Dekker is known mainly as an actor, but in his second directorial effort, he has shown that he is capable of directing a film. He doesn't act in the film, which is quite sympathetic. He gave space to others and they did exactly what they were supposed to do, and that is to make a strongly depressing film that somehow manages to impress the viewer. In my opinion, this was greatly successful.
