Nutzerkritik Necrotongue zur diesen Serie (51)

The Last Kingdom (2015)

Englisch Obviously a much cheaper series than Vikings. It took me a while to get used to, but the gritty plot and especially the excellent main character definitely deserve four stars from me. Unlike a lot of Christian zealots, Uhtred is a loose cannon. He is selfish, disrespectful, uncontrollably angry and unchristian, which is why I’ve grown fond of him. I probably wouldn't have enjoyed the series without him. ()

Season 1 (2015) (S01)

Englisch After watching Season 1, I must say I liked it a lot. The only exception was Episode 3 which made me think I would die of boredom if I ever set foot in a forest again. Another drawback was the low budget. It wouldn't have been a problem if it hadn't made certain scenes look amateurish. But that's as far as my criticism goes. The atmosphere was perfectly grim, there was decent action, and the creators managed to incorporate into the story the typical church obscurantism, intrigue and an atypical protagonist. ()

Episode 1 (2015) (S01E01)

Englisch A decent pilot episode. It was drenched in a grim atmosphere, though I was surprised at how little violence there was, given the historical setting. As an introduction to the story and characters, it worked well, even though the budget was noticeably tight. ()

Episode 3 (2015) (S01E03)

Englisch This episode didn't quite hit the mark for me. The atmosphere was still solid, but the story felt stagnant. Uhtred and Brida kept retreating to the woods to discuss the same things over and over, which got pretty boring at times. ()

Episode 4 (2015) (S01E04)

Englisch Luckily, this episode was a complete turnaround from the previous one. The story had a much better pace, and instead of pointless, boring conversations in the woods, we got some intense scheming and intrigue. It was a nice distraction from the budget constraints, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. ()

Episode 5 (2015) (S01E05)

Englisch The creators really stepped up their game. The atmosphere retained its delightfully gloomy tone, the plot was packed with intriguing events, and we got some solid scheming, great action, and a few emotional outbursts. No boredom here. ()

Episode 6 (2015) (S01E06)

Englisch This episode kept me as satisfied as the previous one. The atmosphere was spot on, the plot maintained its pace, and I got my fill of action, intrigue, and treachery. However, the Cornish costumes almost made me howl in despair. I was ready to give it just four stars, but the way the creators dealt with the church authorities and decrees earned it a fifth star from me. ()

Episode 7 (2015) (S01E07)

Englisch The penultimate episode was close to five stars. The first half was packed with action and executed brilliantly. However, the second half slowed down in the marshy grounds around the Severn River, bogged down by endless debates about God that frayed my nerves. Thankfully, Uhtred the Godless, our notorious arsonist and ship destroyer, saved the day. ()

Episode 8 (2015) (S01E08)

Englisch The season finale kept me engaged from start to finish. There was plenty of scheming and intrigue, the creators managed to gather enough extras for a decent battle, and the ending was crafted perfectly to set up the next season. Overall, I’m very satisfied. ()

Season 2 (2017) (S02)

Englisch I was very surprised by how well Season 2 turned out. After all, I expected it to go down in quality compared to the first one, but I was wrong. Again, I got excellent atmosphere, the Middle Ages simply radiated from the screen, and action wasn’t scarce. Either I got used to the low budget or it wasn’t as obvious as in the previous season. The story nicely followed up on the previous events, and it wasn’t boring. I was also pleased with the new characters who added even more intrigue to the plot. Most importantly, you could see the honest work behind everything. Not everything has to be filled with CGI. I look forward to the third season in joyful anticipation. ()

Episode 1 (2017) (S02E01)

Englisch The creators picked up right where the first season left off, but I found myself a bit confused. One moment Alfred and his loyal followers are celebrating their victory, and the next, Hild has somehow grown a full head of hair in just a few days. That was really odd. Nonetheless, the new season's start was solid, and I'm hopeful the creators will keep up the good work. ()

Episode 2 (2017) (S02E02)

Englisch I was initially leaning towards four stars since the action was limited to minor skirmishes and Hild fitting perfectly into a Dane's armor seemed a bit too convenient. However, I decided to go with a full five stars because the episode was rich in scheming and intrigue. As expected, the Church leaders showed their love for God is surpassed only by their love for power and money. ()

Episode 3 (2017) (S02E03)

Englisch Uhtred's maritime adventure didn't captivate me much, but the events on land more than made up for it. The creators are doing a great job maintaining the right atmosphere, seamlessly transitioning from action to intrigue. Alfred's conclusion was brilliant — what a crafty fox. ()

Episode 4 (2017) (S02E04)

Englisch A great episode. The atmosphere was, as always, excellent. Alongside the usual scheming, there was a hefty dose of action this time around. Despite the budget constraints, the battle for the fortress was engaging, and the outcome of Ragnar's encounter with Kjartan and Sven with Thyra was particularly gratifying. ()

Episode 5 (2017) (S02E05)

Englisch Watching the fifth episode left me a bit disoriented. In the middle of an otherwise gripping season, we suddenly got what felt like a strange pilot episode, easing us into events three years after the last. While it wasn't uninteresting, it did throw me off and unnecessarily slowed down the excellent pace the season had been maintaining. ()

Episode 6 (2017) (S02E06)

Englisch After the slightly awkward previous episode, we were thankfully treated to a full-fledged one. Plots were hatched, paranoia lingered in the air, and the action scenes were definitely worth watching. There was even a shocking case of domestic violence. The creators got back to what they do best. ()

Episode 7 (2017) (S02E07)

Englisch The episode might not have been the most action-packed, but it was thoroughly enjoyable. I'm curious to see how the creators will use the new character, Osferth. I have a feeling his introduction could lead to an entirely new storyline. Also, I couldn't help but notice a classic case of Stockholm syndrome with Erik, even though he's a Dane. ()

Episode 8 (2017) (S02E08)

Englisch The finale really delivered, which was a relief. I'm tired of shows that build up a solid season only to have it all collapse in the last episode. There were plenty of action scenes to enjoy (even though the final battle felt a bit naive), and there was an unexpected sense of tension. Despite losing one of my favorite characters, I was very satisfied overall. ()

Season 3 (2018) (S03)

Englisch I really enjoyed the third season of The Last Kingdom. Unlike most other series, this one seems to get better with each new season. For the most part, the third season kept up a brisk pace and a great atmosphere. The authors created a perfect medieval setting full of intrigue and manipulation. They handled the battle scenes very well, and you could tell the budget was increased compared to the first season. Complete satisfaction on my part. ()

Episode 1 (2018) (S03E01)

Englisch "I am Uhtred, son of Uhtred..."—almost as iconic as "I'll be back!" Uhtred is back after a year, and he's not messing around. I thought the episode would be heavy on dialogue, but the creators dove straight into the action. The pacing was spot on, the medieval vibe was fantastic, and I had a blast watching it. ()
