Als der College-Professor Richard eine lebensverändernde Diagnose erhält, beschließt er sein Leben umzukrempeln. Nur noch sechs Monate bleiben ihm übrig und die will er in vollen Zügen leben. Seine langweiligen Studenten würgt er sofort ab, denn warum noch kostbare Minuten mit schlechten Gedichten verschwenden? Stattdessen geht es in den Vorlesungen plötzlich darum, wo man das beste Marihuana herbekommt. Ohne sich weiter an die engen Fesseln der gesellschaftlichen Konventionen halten zu müssen, geht es dem sterbenden Hochschullehrer plötzlich so gut wie schon lange nicht mehr. I’ve become allergic to films whose plot follows the pattern of diagnosis-melodrama-melodrama-death. As if it wasn't bad enough that it's everywhere around me. The theme can appeal to me only if the authors offer an unconventional perspective. Here, it seemed to be working out for quite a while, so the fourth star didn’t get devoured by a tumor until the final third of the film. I enjoyed the acting performance of Johnny Depp, Zoey Deutch was very pleasing to the eye, and I enjoyed the film for the most part.

Although The Professor tries to pass itself off as a comedy most of the time, it is ultimately a very moving film, centered on a dying university professor, disarmingly played by Johnny Depp, who drops interesting thoughts about life in between talking. The audience experience is enhanced by beautiful music. (80%)
