Aus Mangel an Erfolg nimmt der Schriftsteller Jack Torrance in dem riesigen, geschlossenen Berghotel "Overlook" eine Stelle als Hausmeister an, um dort während des Winters Wartungsarbeiten durchzuführen. Außerdem will er in der Abgeschiedenheit der Berge Colorados einen neuen Roman schreiben.
