Jan is a 55-year-old successful novelist at the peak of his career. When his 85-year-old vivacious and witty mother, Josée, suffers a massive stroke, she suddenly turns into a woeful child with a gibberish speech. It is a great shock for Jan to see his flamboyant mother rendered so helpless and deteriorated. Tasked with taking care of her and confronted with a fast approaching deadline for his novel, Jan has to question his priorities. As Jan reflects on their lives together, the harsh and tender memories bring the family closer. Based on award-winning novelist Tom Lanoye’s novel, Speechless is a beautiful homage to the author’s mother and his relationship with her which will leave you, well, speechless. (Cinequest Festival)
