After being severely wounded during the liberation of Zlín, a partisan played by Jan Kačer remembers only fragments of the past. Is the tragedy in the mountain village of Paseky the fault of his troops? Is the SS commando leader Engelchen going to be captured? What is left of his love, marked by his own regrets and the prejudice of the others? (Summer Film School)

Englisch I would say it's the best film by the directing duo of Ján Kadár and Elmar Klos. A raw, realistic war film that doesn't deny its strong autobiographical literary source by Ladislav Mňačko. A powerful story plus realistic, fully fleshed-out characters are the main strengths of this film. Unlike most of the production from the era of real socialism, it's not overtly heroic and presents its heroes with all their flaws and failures. It's not afraid to humanize the enemy or, as in the case of two deserters who join the partisans, show that nothing was clear-cut during the war. Overall impression: 95%. ()

Englisch An unconventional, but sincere tribute to resistance fighters, without pathetic phrases or emotional outpourings. Kadár and Klos rounded off some of the edges of Mňačko's novel, which only helped. The absence of interviews on the subject of the post-war government, which the communists were keenly waiting for, keeps any ideological ideas to a minimum, leaving only functioning filmmaking that is impossible not to succumb to. Then there is nothing left but two hours of watching a rough walk around Ploština, from which the viewer must inevitably take something away. ()
