Der brillante Dieb Diabolik ist Polizei und Mafia ein Dorn im Auge. Seiner Komplizin und Geliebten Eva möchte er etwas besonderes zum Geburtstag schenken. Daher beschließt er, die berühmte Smaragd-Kette der Frau des britischen Finanzministers zu stehlen. Der brillante Dieb Diabolik lebt zusammen mit seiner Komplizin und Geliebten Eva im Untergrund. Gerade erst von seinem letzten Raubzug in das luxuriöse Zuhause zurückgekommen, denkt er schon über den nächsten Coup nach. Die Polizei, der die üblichen Methoden in Diaboliks Fall nichts nutzen, tappt im Dunkeln. Auch die Mafia hat ihre Probleme mit Diabolik. Deren Chef Valmont handelt einen Deal aus und will den Meisterdieb Kommissar Ginko lebend ausliefern. Diabolik hat derweilen beschlossen, Eva ein Geschenk für den nahenden Geburtstag zu besorgen: eine berühmte Smaragd-Kette. Sie ist im Besitz der Frau des britischen Finanzministers, die sie bei einem offiziellen Besuch auf dem Schloss Saint Just tragen wird. Während das Verbrecherpaar die Gegend auskundschaftet, wird Eva von einer Frau als Diaboliks Komplizin identifiziert. Eine Phantomzeichnung wird angefertigt – Diabolik hat jetzt eine Schwachstelle. Kurz nach dem Raub der Kette wird Eva entführt und soll nur gegen ein Lösegeld von 10 Millionen Dollar und das Smaragd-Schmuckstück freigelassen werden. Diabolik akzeptiert die Bedingungen und steigt für die Geldübergabe in Valmonts Privatjet. Doch der hat eine eingebaute Falltür. (arte)

When describing Danger: Diabolik, allusions to Fantomas, Barbarella and the Batman series of the same period pop up in abundance, but if there is anything to which this magnificently naïve and visually flawless film comes closest, it is the comics of Kája Saudek. Through their framing, mise-en-scene and specific decorative artefacts, some of the shots seem to directly evoke individual panels of the pop-art master, and that’s not even to mention the casting of the central duo, whose ethereal, statuesque nature seems to come to life directly from his drawings. Unlike the unbridled playfulness and humorous exaggeration of the films mentioned above, Danger: Diabolik works with the self-confessed naïveté, artificiality and absurd (anti-)logic of trashy comic books, which it indulgently depicts and takes delight in the fact that it wants to be more comic-bookish or rather more unrealistic than its source work.

A peculiar film that definitely wanted to ride on the popularity of Fantômas and James Bond, and I believe it succeeded to some extent. It's action-packed, it's peculiar, it's comedy and drama all in one, and neither aspect particularly stands out. It's somewhat bizarre, and slightly twisted at times. Simply put, Mario Bava outside of horror, and yet it works brilliantly.
