(filmladen)

Englisch Nothing beats honest biopics of people you knew nothing about, but they enter your soul during the two hours thanks to their uniqueness, and you will never forget them. The story of this folk painter is one of these. Simply a beautiful film where Ethan Hawke shows off acting-wise and Sally Hawkins for a change proved that you can fall in love with her as well. ()

Englisch A very good film, with good enough actors chosen for a strong theme, and they were able to present it well. Ethan Hawke's character is quite easy to hate, yet here he is a man who is supposed to experience a romantic relationship. The character of Maudie (again, the great Sally Hawkins) is also not a classic romance protagonist, and their relationship thus has an even stronger impact on the viewer. ()

Englisch I had no idea I would enjoy this almost-biopic so much, but I did. I guess it's because the serious/tragic story also included subtle humor and very good acting performances on the part of the two protagonists. I don’t know how but those 115 minutes just raced by, despite practically zero action unless you count the trips from the house to the city and back. I had a good time all along. I like films that make me want to find out more about the story. I knew nothing about Maude Lewis, but I do now. ()
