Family comedy The Spooks is ambitious about the genre return in the fantasy world, to amuse viewers by a stories of supernatural creatures and fairy-tale stories. The contemporary fairy-tale comedy The Spooks is about going back to classical special effect films as "Arabela", "Saxana", or "Jak utopit Dr. Mráčka". Move out or pay rent, work or attend a school! That was the verdict pronounced by an officer Patočka over a family of Hugo the bray-bringer, which live in an old house on the edge of a small town. The family of bray-bringer Hugo consist of supernatural creatures – a Hugo´s wife/witch Patricia, their two children, another witch aunt Žofia, merman Bubla and fairy Jitřenka. They are supposed to attach to the human world, start to work, attend school and most of all start to making money for paying a rent. The end of a family seems to be irrevocable, especially after Hugo loses his voice and his wife Patricia leaves him to fly to her first love, a vampire, to Temesvar. The house should be vacated, which the creatures want to prevent at all costs. They set out to find an officer Patočka, who is in charge of their case, he hears their pleas and advise them what they should do. Merman Bubla begin working at the laundry of lady Karolína as an auxiliary assistant, Hugo incorporates into the dramatic ensemble and there he practises a fairy-tale and fairy Jitřenka becomes a first prima ballerina in the same theatre. All will be pretty much harder than it might seem. A whole family await unbelievable adventures of an unknown world. The courageous heroes are about to solve a tough tasks thanks to use of magic, they have to face the traps of a human kingdom, outsmart the red tape and keep their family together. Their colourful and joyful life, endless love and the sense of community are much stronger than greed and meanness of common humans. (Verleiher-Text)

The Spooks ist eine der positiven Überraschungen in Troškas Filmografie. Es handelt sich um ein modernes Märchen in Anlehnung an die Fernsehserie Neviditelní. Man muss nicht unbedingt ins Kino gehen, um The Spooks zu sehen, aber als Event für die ganze Familie ist der Film sehr gut. Und es ist eine Abwechslung, kein pittoresker südböhmischer Klassiker oder ein unbeholfener Rustikaler wie Bad Joke. Ein paar gute Ideen, wenig bekannte Schauspieler in größeren Rollen, pp nur im Rahmen der Notwendigkeit und als Sahnehäubchen auf einem angenehm unprätentiösen Spektakel nette Außenaufnahmen von Liteň. Eine unerwartete Bilanz für einen Zdeněk-Troška-Film. Das ist wahrscheinlich der Grund, warum seine Zahlen wieder so schlecht sind, es ist ihm nicht gegeben, etwas Neues auszuprobieren.

The Spooks verweisen mit ihrem Thema - eine bizarre Familie muss sich mit dem normalen menschlichen Leben auseinandersetzen - sehr deutlich auf Die Addams Family, aber leider sind sie von der Qualität her eher mit Troškas Bad Joke oder Babovřesky vergleichbar. The Spooks ist weder ein Märchen, noch eine Komödie (vielleicht haben mich nur die Szenen bei den Theaterproben ein wenig zum Schmunzeln gebracht), noch ein Familienfilm. Vielmehr handelt es sich um eine wahllos aneinandergereihte Abfolge von Szenen, die sich in ihrer (oft perversen) Skurrilität gegenseitig übertreffen, wobei die von mehreren Nutzern erwähnte Vergewaltigung von Carmen Mayer in Katzengestalt alles "dominiert". Ansonsten haben große Schauspieler wie Dobrý, Polívka oder Polívková hier nichts zu spielen und blamieren sich eher. Troška hat diesmal etwas (mehr) über die Stränge geschlagen!

I wanted to give it one star, thinking that it wasn't as bad, but then I realized it was the same as praising someone for not shooting me in the face with a shotgun and running me over with a car instead.
