Manang Biring

Carl Joseph Papa explores in this film – the first in his country's history shot completely in rotoscoping - how Filipinos, and more specifically those living in the margins of society relate to death. And it does so through the story of Manang Biring, an old woman with barely money who finds out she isn't long for this world, something he has no trouble accepting until she receives a letter from her daughter, whom she hasn't seen for many years. Both her and her grandson, whom she hasn't met, will go visit her the following Christmas, which in principle are beyond her life expectancy. From then on, Manang will try to make said meeting a reality somehow. (Gijón International Film Festival)
