Die Idylle einer norwegischen Dorfgemeinschaft wird von Brandstiftungen erschüttert. Nach erster Panik offenbaren sich immer tiefere Brüche in der bürgerlichen Fassade, als nämlich die Recherchen des Polizisten vor Ort ergeben, dass der Pyromane kein Fremder ist, sondern ein Wolf inmitten der Herde. Visually very successful, not only in terms of the beautiful Norwegian scenery but also the fiery escapades are quite compellingly portrayed. I could also accept it as a story based on true events, but it was missing the element of surprise. From the very beginning, it's clear who the arsonist is, so everything sort of unfolds without much deviation. It’s a pity because the potential of the theme could certainly have been utilized better...

Pyromaniac is absolutely visually unparalleled. But Norway’s issue is that although similarly visually beautiful movies have a brilliant and precise premise, their characters are always lacking, and they are never conveyed the way that they’d deserve. The local pyromaniac is a shining example of a psychopath, but you don’t get to see inside of his mind. Although you are watching a breathtaking Norwegian landscape with a smoking log cabin, shack or a house every few minutes, what’s the point of it all if everything else is just a hollowed-out shell?
