Sie hatten eine tolle Zeit miteinander, die beiden Jugendfreunde Bobby (Anton Yelchin) und Sully. Noch Jahrzehnte später erinnert sich der heutige Fotograf Bobby gern daran. Nie vergessen wird er ein besonders aufregendes Erlebnis, das ihm als 11-Jähriger in der Heimatstadt widerfuhr. Damals zog ein gewisser Ted Brautigan (Anthony Hopkins) als Untermieter in die Wohnung von Bobbys Mutter Liz. Zwischen dem Buben und dem mysteriösen Fremden entwickelt sich eine enge, väterliche Beziehung. Bobby erfährt von Ted, dass dieser über telepathische Kräfte verfügt und Gedanken lesen kann. Schon bald machen auch Bobbys beste Freunde Sully und das Mädchen Carol Bekanntschaft mit Ted. Eines Tages liest Ted die Gedanken des Stadtbekannten Raufbolds Harry, und kann so eine Schlägerei mit Bobby und seinen Kumpels abwenden. Aber auch Ted benötigt die Hilfe Bobbys. Der Junge soll ihn vor gefährlichen Verfolgern warnen. Bobbys Mutter wird das Verhalten ihres Untermieters immer unheimlicher. Als Liz mitbekommt, dass Ted von zwei Geheimdienst-Agenten gesucht wird, will sie ihn ausliefern. Bobby und seine Freunde wollen das mit allen Mitteln verhindern. (ServusTV)

The scenes with Hopkins are excellent, but compared to the book this movie is rather disappointing. The "Low Men in Yellow Coats" (as the original title of the novella reads) are now FBI agents and this movie completely ignores any connection with the "Dark Tower" saga. All that remains is a skeleton of this about growing up which, while it works quite well, it doesn’t enthrall.

This particular Stephen King book is one of my favorites, even if it's not exactly top-notch. But Anthony Hopkins and Anton Yelchin gave the characters the right portrayal, and I just enjoyed watching their story again, which is about coming of age; it's not strictly a horror story, but its kindness with a touch of tragedy makes it even more beautiful.

I was expecting hell, but it delivered. The kids are pretty decent, some of the shots boast pretty decent composition (Bobby and Carol parting at the hanging sheets, for example), and Hopkins is a guarantee, as much as I don't buy him hanging out with these young un’s without any pedo tastes. I know it sounds a bit like fishing pearls out of shit, but that's the most I can get out of a film about childhood experiences and growing up. Except I really wonder who thought this movie was a thriller.
