Agnieszka Holland's graduation film that she made at FAMU in Prague. It is a black-and-white poetic treatise on the hard lot of women, inspired by Isaak Babel's short story The Sin of Jesus. The story of the encounter of pregnant hotel maid Arina with God and his angels is clearly inspired by the influence of Czechoslovak New Wave, especially by the style of Jan Němec's films. Using words sparingly, and with a number of original takes, the director depicts total hopelessness and a possible fall to the bottom where there is no chance of redemption. (Summer Film School)
