Could Billy Bloom be like everyone else if he wanted to? It would certainly save him a whole lot of trouble. But he has absolutely no desire to be like them. When others call him theatrical, he takes it as a compliment; when his classmates feel provoked by his drive to be different, it only motivates him further. Der Originaltitel verwirrt den Betrachter und verweist auf einen Horrorklassiker, doch im Fall von Freak Show handelt es sich um ein farbenfrohes Drama über das Anderssein und die Toleranz gegenüber anderen, was nicht immer der Fall ist. Anfangs fand ich die Hauptfigur sehr seltsam, und es fiel mir schwer, mit ihm zu sympathisieren, aber nach der Hälfte des Films brach das Problem zusammen und man fing an, Billy wirklich zu mögen. AnnaSophia Robb war herrlich abgedreht, Abigail Breslin war ein überzeugendes Monster und das Sahnehäubchen war die Diva Bette Midler. Der ganze Film lebt jedoch von der Leistung von Alex Lawther, der seine Rolle sichtlich genießt.
